repasteurizing jars
    #7672309 - 11/23/07 07:53 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Hai,

I cased my bulk substrate last weekend and pasteurized a couple jars of 50/50 earlier today so i'd have something to patch with. I then discovered the mycelium hasnt poked through the casing layer yet. I need to give them more time I guess.

The lids on the jars I used have holes from previous projects and are covered in tin foil so I dont think they'd store very long. If I end up storing them more than 2 or 3 days can I pasteurize them again?

I pasteurize by placing the jars in boiling water and adjusting the heat so its 150-170 for at least an hour.

Thanks!

Since you have holes AND you are boiling I would redo them. I know it's a pain and if only one of those things were true it would be worth considering, I think, but not with both factors.

Actually, instead of patching, I go over the surface with a fork and redistribute the casing layer to expose the low spots and cover the high spots of mycelium. The scraping action will knock back the high spots to prevent premature pinning and help along the low spots for a quick 'set. It takes a day or two to recover vs. 3-4 for a "patching run".

I was concerned that pasteurizing twice may have some negative effect on the casing material. I know its illogical, as long as you dont over or under heat them I wouldnt see why it would be a problem, but I thought i'd ask. Im PC'ing today anyway so its not that big of a deal.

Redistribution of the casing layer like you mentioned will probably work better for my situation. I didnt realize you could do it that way. Its day 8 since ive cased and its just starting to come through, so the quicker the better before the fruit flies carry it away. Thanks for the info!
