goin to NYC for the weekend - need advice

I'm takin the in-laws to manhattan for the weekend. I booked and paid for a hotel in East Rutherford, New Jersey already. Don't laugh.. it was 250 dollars cheaper PER NIGHT.
I'm trying to plan my trip and I'm trying to be as frugal as possbile. Apparently the PATH is a little too far away from my hotel (I was told not to stay in Newark as it was ghetto as shit) so I'll have to use my car. I was hoping to park and take one of the ferries into the city to avoid driving, but after I found out that it costs 10 BUCKS one WAY on the ferry, between 4 ppl.. that's friggin 80 bucks round trip PER DAY. Screw that! I guess I'll just drive in and park my car in one of those robotic car lots for 25 bucks a day... I found a cool one around Bowery and Houston which amazed me.... not just the fact that there was a machine that parked my car 3 stories up in the open.. but the fact that it only cost 25 bucks for the WHOLE day.
We're goin to take two days and do the tourist thing basically. My plan is to hang out downtown on Saturday, head back to the hotel that night and hit midtown on Sunday. I've been walking around downtown a few times and I know how to get around down there... gonna do the WTC site, ellis island, statue of liberty, etc. The prices are pretty cheap or free for all that stuff.
That's the problem though.. that's all I know is downtown. I don't know shit about midtown. I guess we'll do the empire state building and check out central park and crap... I guess we're obliged to stop by times square really quick just to say we went there, but no one I'm with has any interest in blowing all their money on overprices food and clothes so we probably won't stick around there long. We're just looking for cheap, interesting places... places with nice views... places that would make good pictures. I'm lucky to have in-laws that don't expect me to blow a lot of money and just want to hang out.
Speaking of which... anyone know how much it costs to visit the top of the empire state building. I'm just trying to find some places to take pictures with cool views. I figured I'd take everyone to the top of the empire state building or the chryster building.. then maybe central park or whatever. I just don't know how much they'd charge and I'm trying to plan my budget.
Anyone else know any descent places in midtown to check out that don't cost too much?

Yea... That's probably why the cheapest hotels were there. I ended up getting a place in Rutherford/Lyndhurst next to the Meadowlands.
I hear it isn't as bad... and the hotel is a nice chain so I figure I'll be safe.. although the price was almost as cheap as Newark which seems to worry me.

Top of the Empire State is now a whopping 17 dollars or so per person. And really, not that worth it.

Thanks ya crazy readheaded russian. I knew putting a post with the work NEW YORK in the subject would catch the attention of our resident new york alient expert
I'll avoid going to the top, thanks. I'll save it for a trip where it's just me and someone else that way I don't have to pay 70 bucks for a nice view.
I wonder if any other skyscrapers have a pretty cool view and don't charge anywhere near as much.
Sounds to me like midtown is just an overpriced tourist trap.
Are there any modern art museums in midtown there? (Probably a stupid question). If so.. do they try to ass rape you through your wallet as well?

Friends of mine play there every Fri. night... if ya like old time rock and roll... I'd meet you for a brew if I could, but I'm well past the legal limit to drive...(even though I'm only about 15 minutes from there. and enjoy THE City...

Consider skipping MOMA--$20 is crazy. The metropolitan museum of art is a much better deal. It says admission is $20, but it's really a voluntary donation and I say $5 per person is adequate and don't be embarrassed to pay less than the $20--they don't care even if you pay $1. The Met has a ton of awesome modern art as well as every other kind of art you can think of (Chinese, Greek, Korean, Indian, Mayans and Aztecs, furniture, costumes...) and it's all amazing!
Also, on Fridays and Saturdays the met has a cocktail/wine bar set up on their ornate balcony with live classical music playing. You can get drinks and appetizers there with the money you save not going to moma. http://www.metmuseum.org/visitor/dining_balcony.asp
