SHROOMCICLEs! oh nos!
    #7670915 - 11/23/07 03:00 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

checked my patch today and just as i thought the last 2 days of frost had caught up with the cute little guys
so i preformed an emergency patchectamy. picking pretty much everything standing.

might be the last flush for this poor patch. the ground was frozen solid

and this brings me to my question. hopfully macro psilygirl or someone knowes this, does freezing the fruit effect potency severly? iv noticed faster and more wide spread blueing. but they should still be ok right?

also dring them? any extra thawing steps or anything or just check on them turn them ect?

I don't know if freezing will effect the potency, but in my experience, it will effect the texture. I froze a crop a morels once thinking that I could thaw them out and chop them up to put in eggs (after the season ended). Well, when I thawed them( I put them on a window screen and used a small fan to circulate the air), they were limp and slimy, instead pf firm and dry. The texture was so bad that I had to throw them all out, which really sucked because the season was already over and I couldn't get any more. My advice is don't freeze them but dry them out instead. Drying doesn't effect potency, as far as I know.

If they're frozen on the ground, in the mature or slightly immature stage, it shouldn't effect the potency but it may effect texture. They may be on the leathery side when you go to eat them. Then it's just a matter of what type of texture you can stomach. Personally, if something is slimy or too leathery, I ain't eating it.

Well... If you haven't noticed any problems yet (such as the juices leaking out of the thawing mushroom, like a sponge) then I would not expect any significant loss in potency.

Pictures??

A little bit of liquid seeping out is okay, however, not ideal. The blue liquid is active, obviously. So hopefully it is not much. But if the mushrooms are going all soggy and limp, and the liquid is soaking the paper towel, that's bad. They will lose a lot of potency if they lose that much water.

Let me know how it goes. If they get soggy and don't dry well, next time you pick frozen mushrooms, get them into the freezer asap, and when you want to use them, make tea with the frozen mushrooms.

hmmm. thats a good idea. well they arnt tottaly frozen
infact they would have thowed on there own by the end of the day. but the last 2 frosts have all but halted growth so i yanked up most all of them. if it gets wet in the next 2 weeks they may start going again ut i dunno.

they seems to be drying quite well
ill update this when i know for sure

Ooooh.... i dunno.

I see myself complaining a great deal.... the distance I can muster, but if there are mushrooms along the way, i dunno. Or if it is sunny, FUCK!!!
I would need a lot of drugs.

I wonder if you could apply some kind of cold pressing techniques they use to harvest some frozen grapes too active fungus.
