misting cakes and shrooms?
    #7670619 - 11/23/07 01:32 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

okay, just one more little sticking point that has me slightly confused. when keeping up the proper humidity levels in the fruiting chamber that contains multiple pf cakes, that have been dunked for 24 hours and cased in vermiculite, and the sit atop a 5 inch layer of moistened perlite, is it counter productive to allow a very fine mist to settle on the cakes and developing mushrooms? i have read to keep the cakes dry, but why would that matter?

Mist them ever so slightly for the first day or two, just to get the verm a little moist. After that you probably won't need to mist them at all. Although the perlite might start to dry up, so you may need to add some water. But thats about it.

If you mist lightly remember to fan hard afterwards especially if there are primordia on the cake as standing drops of water can cause them to abort.

If you fan hard after misting there will be no drops and so, no problem

Misting each time you fan out your fruting chamber is absolutly fine. Just remember that when you have primordia/knots you dont want to mist to avoid hurting them. Once they devolop to pins, misting is fine providing extra moisture to ensure good growth. Misting before fanning ensures that any extra moisture evaporates as to not cause any harm.

Personaly i have not had any problems misting each time i open up to fan, and the last flush i had great success injecting 10cc of water during the flush. This however is not regarded as absolute scientific fact as this was only one flush.

As a general guideline, mist before each fanning, once u notice primordia and knotting stop misting to avoid hurthing them, once they develop pins u can start misting again to help moisture.

If you suspect that your cakes are drying out, sit them in a saucer of water to provide more water, or if you have pin developing from the bottom inject 10CC of water from a syringe.

Shrooms love moisture, lack of moisture can produce small shrooms
