The first time I used my PC, there was water touching the jars but everything PC'd fine....
Then I read in multiple areas on this forum that the water is not supposed to touch the jars...So, the 2nd time...I put just enough water to fill the bottom(and stacked the jars carefully on top of mason lids....I PC'd for about an hour and ALL THE WATER EVAPORATED and BURNED ALL MY JARS AND THEIR CONTENTS and now everything smells like shit.
Please, ADD A GOOD AMOUNT OF WATER in your PC if you're going to PC for an hour....................

Add about an inch to an inch and a half of water to your PC.
PC for 90 minutes.

The pressure in a PC allows the water to also be heated to 250.

Obviously not, I can't put so much water that the jars will float......Anyways, I threw out 8 jars(including 5 cups of verm, and 1.3 cups of BRF)...........................
going to cook a fresh batch and sterilize it with brand new jars tonight after I get off work. Also, should I use 1/2 pint jars or pint jars? I know there is more surface area on 1 pint although it takes longer to colonize.
What are your guys' preference? 1/2pint or full pint?

Yea you obviously would not want to do that which is why I said almost.
And quart jars with bird seed or rye > brf.

is there a huge difference in terms of amount of mushrooms yielded? Since there is less surface area on half pint? Or are their about the same results?

Bummer man. happened to me once where my jars almost dried out b/c water level went down to .25 - .5 inch in the bottom after PCing for an hour.
I put a washcloth on the bottom of the PC to insulate the jars against the metal, then I usually put in 1.5-2 inches of water. The jars are submerged in this water.
Works for me.
Its weird that someone in this thread mentioned that they were instructed not to have the water touch the jars...
nah, the water CAN touch the jars, no prob there.
Thats how I do it... mine jars are in the water.
Btw.. this thread is 1211 days old. Bwahaha! go me! relevant.

Yeah it says dont let it run dry in about 100 diff places. Water touching the bottom of the jars is always my rule of thumb so it wont go dry. I also use 2 layers of tin foil. My 0.02.

Yeah I use a wash cloth as well,
once the PC starts steaming or rocking, reduce the heat on the oven until it barely rocks, that will make the water last alot longer.
