I'll be going to india and nepal for half a year in a few weeks, and i guess it would be nice if I could trip there
I'm hesitant about asking the locals because they love my money out there and it would suck if they gave me the wrong fungi for some easy bucks..
So does anyone have any experience in this? It would be cool if I would be able to find some myself

I probably won't be able to post here to ask for an id. Is there a way to do it safely? Maybe a kind of mushrooms thats identifiable for a noob like me?

nope aside from learning how to do it correctly. There is no n00b method of mushroom ID. Take the time and learn how to do it properly.

And when I bring a book? It would be pretty safe if I could look up the species in the book right?

books arnt foolproof. You need to be familiar with the mushroom. If you arny 100% sure of your id DO NOT EAT THE MUSHROOM.
It takes practice, and practice, and practice. Learn the charecteristics of the good ones and the bad and learn to differentiate them.

mushrooms dont read text books unfortunately... however they do have the interwebz in india man...
so u could always do as haymaker suggested, take pics, preserve your pickings if u cant get online immediately then post the pics here for an id...
either way do as much research as u can on the species u intend to hunt before u go and dont eat anything that u havent identified 100% as an active or edible species.

you could grow them (if its legal, of course;)), just bring a spore print and you can supply yourself for the entire time there probably with one or two jars.

Reason: Please read the Mushroom Hunting Forum Rules before posting:

Quote:
I. Mushroom Hunting Forum rules
3. Do NOT ask what mushrooms can be found growing in your state or imediate area. This information is easily found in the Mushroom Hunting FAQ and/or has been posted at least once elsewhere on the net. Also see this document: http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area
6. No asking WHEN or WHERE mushrooms, or a specific mushroom species will grow. This includes, asking what habitat a mushroom[s] can be found- or their preferred fruiting conditions. This can be very simply answered by using the "search posts" feature: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php Asking if "now is a good time to look for mushrooms". Or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. Each mushroom species has a different rate of growth- some mushrooms, like Ganoderma species, take quite a while to mature, compared to mushrooms like Conocybe, which take only one night to show up, and mature, and are all shriveled by the end of the next day. Conversely, Ganoderma persist for months, only disappearing when the bark beetle infestation has done enough damage, that the fruiting body falls to the ground, and slowly gets eaten away, and any remainder, crumbles into the top soil. These issues are sort of redundant, as addressed in rules #4 and #5, yet needed to be explained more concisely, due to many people seeing these questions as loop-holes since they were not directly described.
