ID help - Chaga?
    #7664733 - 11/21/07 08:21 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Found it growing off the base of a cherry tree. I am almost positive it is the Chaga mushroom, Inonotus obliquus. Just wanted to get a few opinions before I collected some. Thanks .

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus.
All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the
octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV.
But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns.
Also he got a race car.
Is any of this getting through to you?

Riiight... Sorry. pardon my drunken posts.

Hmm. Could be. I mean, it looks ugly enough, and is said to grow most commonly on Birch, but also alder, elm, beech, maple, and other hardwoods (cherry perhaps).
