Can you help me reverse-engineer this ingenious LC dispenser?

Well, Una hasn't posted here for over a year, so I can't just send her a PM on this...maybe you all can help me with this, as I am really not too technical.
This can be used for LC or for sterile dispensing of hot agar media into petri dishes, so kinda multi-purpose. The original thread/post is here - http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2909342#Post2909342
Quote:
Una said: OK, here's our advanced and automated inoculation method: This is the peristaltic pump that will be used to pump to liquid inoculum into the bags. On top is a device we built, ourselves...

...It is a timer with a foot switch, so that the pump will deliver the same amount every time the pedal is pressed

A silicone tube is fitted with a half syringe that is screwed tight. The tube itself is sterilized in the pressure cooker, The bottle with liquefied mycelium is in the flow cabinet, the tube goes into the bottle, then to the pump, then to the needle.

The bags are first soaked with alcohol, and left to stand for a few minutes. They are then wiped dry with a tissue and the needle is introduced. The foot pedal is pressed, and presto, 10-100 ml is squirted in.

The bags are sealed with a hot glue gun.

Growth is fast.

The end result, healthy spawn!

I also use this setup to fill tubes with agar for my tissue culture plants.
I found this peristaltic pump for $125 brand new http://www.omega.com/ppt/pptsc.asp?ref=FPU500
What I want to know, is how to hook it up to a foot pump, and also what to look for in a foot pump.
In case you're wondering how they work, Wikipedia has a nice animation of one working here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peristaltic_pump
Thanks all, I've wanted one of these since I saw her post this way back. Also I found a commercially produced one for $700 here, that's more than I want to spend...http://www.tritechresearch.com/cgi-bin/shop/pourboy.html?id=NLPkIHcH

I looked at the original thread and I noticed something else interesting. She skips the fermentation step and takes fragmented mycelium straight into grain. Nothing better than streamlining.

I don't actually think that the thread is implying that she is not allowing the mycelium to mature in culture (grow ) before using it. She kinda skips that part though, so no way to tell either way.
I've done it both ways, it works, but if I have time, I'd rather let it grow out.
Anyway, how do I rig that sucker up? I can't afford $700+ for a substitute for my Socorex self-filling syringe! JD

Hi, I will try to give this a shot, so here goes.
First off the foot thing is not a foot pump, but rather a foot switch. It is used so that you have both your hands free to do other things (rather than push buttons with one hand... I would imagine).
Then with the Peristaltic Pump for $125 you would also have to get the 110 Vac Pump Motor for $975. and that is what runs the pump and it can also be programmed to turn at a certain RPM so that there is so much flow.
I think what Una did is get a cheaper pump/motor set up and built a timer for it, and this timer is operated with the foot pump. I would imagine that once you tap the foot pump it activates the timer and the timer turns the pump on for a certain time (few seconds) and turns it off.... kind off so you don't have to worry about pressing your foot for precisely so many seconds each time.
If you just get the Peristaltic Pump ($125), then you would have to build a motor setup to run it. easier said than done. you would have to find a motor that can spin at different RPM and can be accurately programmed (or controlled with a linear POT) to stay at the desired RPM. then you would have to build a timing device (the black box in Una's pic), that can also be adjusted at different times, and can be toggled on with the foot switch ... and it turns the pump on for the required time and then shuts it off. then you (this part can be trial and error) go to page 42 of 52 here http://www.omega.com/Manuals/manualpdf/M2219.pdf and Table 9-2 has the Average Flow Rates. find the size of the tube you are using, and how much liquid you want each time you step on the switch, and calculate how long the pump should be on. then set your timer for that and hopefully you should be set.
Hope this helps, also this is what I understand and I could very well be wrong, but maybe this make spark a few ideas of your own.
Good luck.

Damn, so I have to buy something to power that pump? Oh man, that sucks...Sounds way complicated to me. But I don't want to give up on this.

That is just what I think, cause the web-site says
(1) FPU500 Peristaltic pump, (1) FPU5-MT-110 110 Vac Motor = $1,100.00
But I'm sure you could find a cheaper one. I don't know where or who uses these, but maybe someone is upgrading and could let you have their old one for cheap Or try Ebay.
I really does seem like a great piece of equipment to have, especially for pouring petri dishes. good luck

Dam it, I need to learn to type faster.
That is a nice find by Mushymart.

Man, I saw that PourBoy III over at eBay, I've been looking at all the used lab/medical equipment sites, and even at $700 new, that thing is a great price for what it does. That said, I don't want to spend that much.
The item description there doesn't even say if the item powers on. It's missing the tubing (I can buy it new for $135 + or - from the original link above I posted), and also the foot pedal, so I'm skeptical on it's condition.
I sent him a question, so I'll see how it goes. That thing looks a lot less complicated and is specifically made for this, so that's cool. The tubing says it can be autoclaved, but not too much...I wonder if I can switch that tubing out with something else. JD

Here's how the things work, I should be able to figure something out from this...I mean this guy has no other equipment besides some tubing and his fingers...

Wait until I pop a syringe tip on it
Nah seriously though, a friend of mine told me I need to be looking at aquarium/reef dosers...any of y'all know what they are/ how they work?

This should be easy to make. Any motor that spins at a low speed would work. The key is to build feet onto the moter and a case to hold the tubing. Rig something up with a low speed drill perhaps?
Or hell for that matter duct tape the tube to a 2x4 and roll your foot on it. squirt one shoe per bag lol
