Mushroom identification?

When you're walking along the grass and you spot mushrooms growing, how do you determine what kind they are? The last thing I want to do is pick them and eat them, then find out that they are poisonous (not the psychedelic kind).

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. Also he got a race car. Is any of this getting through to you?

get a book on mushroom identification. READ. LEARN. then go hunting.
don't ever eat anything you don't know 100% what it is. Some mushrooms that are edible or psychoactive look like other mushrooms that can make you sick or kill you, but not if you know what to look for and what you are looking for.
First off though, you should spend time picking mushrooms and practicing their identifications, posting pictures and ID requests here and getting as much help as you can before you even think of eating anything you find.
