Small Stirrer for hobbyists

I was searching for supplies and I came across this. It's too small for my needs, but for lots of people it would be very useful. And cheap. The vessel is 30ml. https://www.cynmar.com/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=ACY49910

Wow- it looks like there's about 5ml in that vial.
I have instructions in my sig for a cool stirrer that's inexpensive and easy to build it anyone needs pix/plans.

Thanks I've read someone else's DIY Stirrer and yours is written much clearer. I have two large case fans and one dead harddrive already!

Thanx, I hope the pix helped out.
You're halfway there!! You just need a tupperware box and a phone charger from a thrift store.
Now I'm drooling over the stirrers that hold 4-8 containers on 1 plate....:)

My stirrer is a cpu fan and hard drive magnet, it works great. I have a ten turn potentiometer in series with the cpu fan which allows very fine control of the motor speed.

I didn't have as much luck with the 'upgraded' Stirrer 2.0 .ver.
I don't think i had enough range in the potentomatanenter thingie.
An on/off switch was a bigger asset then the variable speed - at least in my case. your milage may vary.

I found a source for magnets that are cheaper than the screwdriver I need to take apart my hard drive. But I need some help picking magnets. I think I need diametrically magnetized disc magnets or an axially magnetized cylinder.
PS. Look at Abes head on a Penny, cut it in half visually. If one half were north and one half were south, this would be diametrically magnatized. Now, if Abe's head were S, and the back were N, that magnet would be axially magnetized.

Do you have specs for this potentiometer?

I'm starting to think I know which magnet, but I need pull-force data.
"Look at Abes head on a Penny, cut it in half visually. If one half were north and one half were south, this would be diametrically magnatized." - I found one like this.
Now, we had a stack of pennys, and the side we could see Abe's head were S, and the back were N, that magnet would be axially magnetized. If this magnet were 2 inches long, I think it could probably do the job. I think this type of magnet would work best.

No Life: I just reread your write up. I think I know why your stirrer requires dead center placement.
Only one pole of your magnet is facing up. If both poles were up, the stirrer bar would have a larger target.

That was the only way the magnets would stick. If they went the other direction, they would be repeled from the mounting!!
I'm a simple man- I just go with what works.

> Do you have specs for this potentiometer?
It is a 1k ten turn pot. Seems to be an ideal value, any speed can be chosen with a lot of precision. I really recommend a ten turn pot, that really makes it.
I use a 12v cpu fan and power it with a 16 vdc laptop switching power supply.
I put the cpu fan under an upside down ceramic bowl and tucked away the wires. It looks pretty cool, like a perpetual motion machine.
Next time I will put some heat shrink tubing around the stir bar so it is silent.

Excuse my noobiness, but what is a stirrer for? Why couldn't you just stir it manually?

Seen it done. Someone sterilized some wire and used that to stir and break up the myc. This just removes that and lets electricity do the work for you. You can also gently swirl the jars once a day. Same thing. This for for the high end grows that want the ideal environment for you mycelium to prosper in.

I have a question for all you do it yourself stirrer makers out there. How do you get he hard drive magnet off the metal bracket that it is mounted on? I want just the magnet itself but can't get it off, do you know a solvent that will remove the glue. Trout

> Why couldn't you just stir it manually?
You could, but sometimes you need to stir for long periods of time. It is nice to be able to work on something else rather than stirring a beaker of liquid for a few hours. The stirrers also free up your hands. This is nice if you are doing volumetric titration, for example, and want fine control over the pipette. There are other reasons as well...

Pry it off with a screwdriver.

I picked one of these up for a buck its a cup that is for making cappuccino or something but its heat proof so I just boil it for lc and there is a lid already and it has a mixer built into the bottom of the cup. You just push a button and it stirs with a sharp spring thing breaks everything up.
