What do you think of this glovebox?
    #7662034 - 11/21/07 09:24 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I consider buying this glovebox:

http://www.mushbox.com/glove-box.html

I know it's quite expensive, but I like the idea of getting clean air through the filter. Does anybody have any experience with this glovebox? If so, what has been your experience like?

A computer fan will not draw air through a synthetic filter disk, tyvek, etc. In fact, after PC'ing, it takes about an hour for the vacuum in grain jars to equalize through the filter disk, and that vacuum is far more powerful than a computer fan. What will happen is a computer fan will create turbulence, which stirs the air that is already in the glovebox around, increasing contamination risk. A still air glovebox works best.

you could make that one for 1/4 the price.

still air is the best i made a great one for 60 from home depot. just walk around and think about what would work it'll come to you.

I think it's junk.

for two reasons.

the first being what RR said.
the way they describe it and build it shows they don't have a clue
on how a glove box should work.
that design is sure to ruin your projects.

using gloves like that is also a bad idea.
sleeves are best, using latex gloves for your hands.

you want a still air box with sleeves.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5937476/an/0/page/0

build one of these, you won't be sorry.
you'll save $100 too.

i like the upside down version better. The angle is better for working..

:pm: me if you have questions about lasers

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Obviously you guys do not recommend the box. Yet I still fear the airborne contaminants inside the glovebox. Is there anything that can kill them effectively?

You don't need to. They won't be circulating. That's why we recommend still air gloveboxes. You can mist the inside of the box with water to draw and hold anything to the edges, but that makes it hard to see what you're doing and is unnecessary.

You need to clean it first. Look at MM's post.
You want still air.

Acidified bleach may be the perfect cleaner...

Build a glovebox... it will be better anyway

it's terribly easy to build a still air box

just get a clear tub for about 3-4$ at wal-mart, cut two holes large enough for you to comfortably work inside of it (careful, the clear plastic tends to shatter) and then turn it upside down, and voila! you have a still-air box, put on some elbow gloves and you've got yourself a practically contamination free work enviroment (assuming you cleaned well)

if you make your holes too big (ie. it shatters on you) you can easily cover them with duct tape. i usually covered the insides of the holes with duct tape anyway to prevent injury

it's all easy bud, don't be so paranoid
i've found it almost difficult to get a contam with this box^
you don't need any fancy shit

Check out harbor freight! Use one of their blast cabinets. Much nicer for the price.

The box in my sig is somewhat similiar to the one on that box with the exception that my fan can be closed off so that there is no circulation.

It is actually the filler pump from a popped air mattress. Since building it, I have actually gone to just keeping the fan closed off, and using it for the still air properties, and I almost NEVER contam jars.

I dont know if Im lucky, have a clean house, or live in a low spore area, but I almost NEVER contam anything.

Just build the easy still air box these guys are recommending. I wasted my time with a complex positive air yadda yadda system. No point in you wasting yours.

Just be clean.
