E-bay question

I am a newbie in the e-bay community and i wanted to ask if anyone has any knowledge or personal experiences, in how one would go in order to be safe in the following situation:
Item price is 2000 GBP ,seller seems trustworthy with 100% feedback and good comments plus more similar items sold in the past
He has one more listing right now of a similar priced item
Good communication and positive about picking up the item in person if i can (which i can't)
The thing is, that because the Buy It Now price is no longer valid after the auction begins, and because i agreed to get the item for the buy it now price, the seller asked me to send him the money simply by using pay-pal not within e-bay.
Is there any way i can achive more safety or do i have to simply trust him?
Thanx for your input

If your in the US and the item is for personal/ household use (not buisness use) you can use paypal, credit card, and be protected via chargeback laws. If you want more protection go with an escrow service.
The caveat is that some card brands consider (or had, I don't know currently) paypal to be a cash advance and will try not to allow a chargeback, though they've settled in the past when sued on this.
Basically make sure your product fits the criteria as above and that your issuer allows chargebacks for ebay purchases. If something goes arey dispute in paypal, then file the chargeback before statutory protection lapses.

Thanx for your help, but i don't quite understand how chargeback works....i send the money via paypal and wait for my parcel....what if after a few days i don't see it?
Do they keep the money in his bank without letting him cash them out or what?
How do i get my money back>? i am located in Europe.
Thanx in advance

if you don't get what you bought then you file a claim and they will investigate, then they will decide if they are going to favor him or you and if they favor you they give the money back.
I wouldn't buy anything like that, ebay specifically tells you not to, so i'm not sure if they would give your money back or not.

i wouldn't do it if it's not within ebay, did you click buy now or just agree in an email or something?
If you clicked buy now then you would be paying it through ebay and it would be traceable in ebay and paypal, but if you just send money it'll only be traceable in paypal and there will be no proof you bought it from ebay.
i wouldn't do it.

Ignore everything I said, this was geared towards america's credit laws
Their are plenty of other resources for finding out what the card issuer's responsibilities in your country are

If you look they have online sites to act as arbitrators for large purchases as such... like you deposit them 50% the seller sends them the item they verify the item for you - you send the remaining 50% - then the arbitrator sends the item to you and all the money to the seller... oh yeah there goes 3% of the deal (at least!) but at least your not ripped off
I have had great luck of my credit cards standing up against Paypal. Anyways Paypal won't fight a dispute when they know you're right, like for instance if you file a Claim for a shitty item or whatever Paypal may say they were 'unable to recover funds from a seller' so then I just dispute my credit card for that amount and win every time.
Also, NO ONE has mentioned DO NOT GIVE PAYPAL YOUR BANK INFORMATION OR IF THERE IS A BIG PROBLEM THEY WILL PULL FUNDS FROM YOUR BANK WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION.
