Anyone who's heard a loon call...
    #7661545 - 11/21/07 03:08 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

A young Canadian poster to my journal wrote the following and when I posted it to trip reports it got no response.. :frown: so I mosied on down t'the pub t'lay it on the table fer ya. N-joy...anyone who's heard a loon...

ahh yes...the loon. Haunting is the perfect word. I hear them quite a lot throughout the year. I go for well planned camping trips every long weekend of the "snowless" part of the year and the loon is a common friend on these outings.

I have a very nice memory of camping one night, though this was a long time ago. I was with a bunch of good friends and it was just all around good times with booze, marijuana and fungus. That particular night, I wasn't partaking so much in the booze and was leaning a little more towards the fungus. I had just the perfect buzz and was getting lost in the glow of the fire as I played the acoustic. It was fairly late, as it was coming into morning. There was just the slightest hint of day coming. As all my good friends sat and joked around the fire, I started to journey towards the edge of the lake, leaving the warmth of the fire. But I had the warmth of the mushrooms just giving me the perfect feeling of comfort.

Out on the lake, it lay still like it was frozen and the reflection of the moon and stars in the water was intense. And like I said, it was even more intense with the most faint glow of daytime in the distance. I saw some loons quietly moving in the distance. As I softly started playing the guitar, the loons started calling back. And for a half hour we basically talked back and forth...me with my guitar and them with their powerful yet calming calls.

Very neat experience indeed.

The loon's call is unique and very... I don't know... tranquil? Cannot be described really.

It's an extremely Canadian sound.

Loon: My "mock-wiki" submission...
A large webbed-footed water fowl found only in N. Am. mostly north of the Mason Dixon line....actually, mostly north of Niagra Falls. lol

Larger than a duck, smaller than a swan...it's neck is ringed in white with smatterings of while "sprinkled"  down it's back. There's at least one Native Canadain story about how it got the markings that I heard as a child living in T.O.. (Toronto Ont. ignorant Yankees) lol

JJ...I only myself recently found out, for ex. that Vancouver is called Van-City by the locals.

Still...vie les Canadiennes!

WTF?!

I was just reading this thread, and i swear there was the sounds of a loon calling on the movie i had in the background 'Deep Blue Sea'.

Come to think of it i think there's a loon sound in the Fellowship of the Ring when the black riders ride off after the ferry...

The wailing wound is really haunting.

I remember a few years ago some state in the US was going to start hunting Canadian Geese...and hunting them to extreme. Of course people in Canada got really upset over this. I think the general sentiment was along the lines of "well if you are going to make it legal to kill Canadian Geese...we will just make it legal to kill Bald Eagles!"

Trendal...nice Canada Goose...I saw some in St. Johns Park near Buckingham Palace after being away from Canada one school year and the site was down-right nostalgic...sorry for sounding nerdy but it's true.

Most mid-western US states have an extensive canada goose season and the bag limits are high.  Most people shoot them for sport and let them get burnt in the freezer because they taste terrible.  The town I grew up in has an two day season inside city limits at a local park, they say it helps get the birds moving so they don't stick around all winter.

Their space is being encroached upon and the same w/ African and Asian tigers and elephants but, with those larger animals, there are many more harmful results to property and sometimes humans if push comes to shove. A goose can hiss atcha pretty fiercely but they're "sitting ducks" otherwise.

(Adom...you didn't answer my curious question dear...)

C. Geese can really mess up a park...ever slipped on or even just walked through an area they covered in the green yuck they leave behind? Not fun. I wouldn't shoot em though.

Camping on a very remote Minnesotan/Canadian lake as a kid, I will never forget hearing the loons in the morning and evenings before heading out to fish. Anytime I hear the sound on TV or a movie, I am right back there, remembering all those great times times.

canada geese are like rats with wings here...they are so comfy in suburbia with cornfields and parks etc to graze in..they dont leave anymore. Its a local population. the dnr was letting you shoot 5 a day and if one makes a nest on your land you can take the egg. In some office parks you see goose roadkill everywhere.

I totaly agree, they shit up all the golf courses too!

In some areas they are training dogs to chase them away, it seems not to be working well. Locally we have hundreds of them!

Now tell me your opinion of the description made by the original writer...a young Canadian tripper. He posted to the Canadian Winter Gathering thread...that's how we "virtually" met.

It's so cool...to play and connect...to 'sing' a duet at pre-dawn with a loon...
