Is temperature change REALLY necessary for mycobags?
    #7661514 - 11/21/07 02:30 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I am going to be growing in a dorm room and a mycobag would be the only realistic way to do it. I am going for super-stealth, and I sure as hell am not going to get an incubator in here without raising some eyebrows from my roomate. I just want to put the bag in my lockable drawer and have mushrooms in 5 weeks. I can do the lighting once fruiting begins but I cannot do temperature...

So, all I read here is about how getting just the right temperature is essential, but on all the grow bag websites and other places it says you can just leave it and mushrooms will grow by themselves. Plus, in my dorm it's around 72 degrees which is only a few degrees from the temperature for which you all go through great lengths to achieve.

No lectures about dorm growing please, can I just get the facts about whether or not I will be tripping in a couple months if I do this method with no incubator?

The will fruit fine at that temperature, colinisation might take alittle bit longer than normal, my Fruting chamber drops to 68C when its stored in my cupboard and not near a heater.

mycobags generate some heat in the middle, so youll be fine at room temp.

ok thanks a lot. I have a few more questions I couldn't find with search though...

1. is light alone enough to trigger fruiting or should I do some type of ghetto incubation like wrapping a blanket around it during colonization and then taking it off to cause a slight decrease in temp and trigger fruiting?

2. Can mycobags be transported in a car (wrapped in a duffle bag) without damaging them?

3. Should I wrap something around the sides where I don't want mushroom growth during fruiting so that they get no light? (The bag will be on it's side in my drawer, with a battery powered fluorescent light at the near the empty part of the bag)

Thanks

1. Temperature drops are not essential for most species. This is mostly misinformation that has been regurgitated over and over again.

2. In a word, yes. Be careful about roughing it up, but you should be fine.

3. Yes.

Colonization and fruiting temperatures are not as important as you seem to think. There is a decent range of temperatures that will work that vary in speed and risk of contamination. From beginning to end, my spawn and substrate are always at room temperature (70-72ยบ).
