Do I really need to take jazz guitar lessons?

Okay so before you offer your advice, consider this:
I'm a self taught musician. I took a couple years of piano lessons when I was young but I first learned to play by ear and continue to play by ear. I also taught myself guitar and have been playing for a number of years, but have been stuck in a kind of rut and recently decided I would start taking jazz lessons to increase my versatility.
However, just spending a few minutes on YouTube has given me a lot of cool licks to learn and practice and I'm wondering if I should even bother with lessons or if I should find a really good Jazz guitar instructional video for the price of one lesson and just practice until I've mastered everything I can that way?
Seems like since I'm accustomed to being self-taught I don't need a whole lot of one-on-one instruction but rather just some general instruction like can be found from a video.
Any accomplished guitarrists out there have experience with either?

If you find someone with a good style you should go for it. Lessons are fun. It's not like you're going to be slapped on the wrist for doing something wrong. It's about opening up and exploring yourself with another musician.
Do you play in a band or with other people at all?

Oh I know that... but I'm just saying if I'm going to pay $30 a lesson and for the first 20 lessons its all "learn this lick / scale" type stuff, I'd rather save the money and get a head start elsewhere.
I'm tight on money is the issue at hand basically. I can afford lessons but I don't want to waste my money if it's not worth it at first.

you can learn what you want at lessons, just try to meet the teachter first and talk with him about what you want lessons for and see if you can come to an agreement (no problem I think)

I'm like you and personally I don't think I'll ever get lessons on anything music-related.
That being said, jazz is one of the most difficult styles to master, so you might need some help, but why not start by your own and see what happens? IMHO most awesome artists are somewhat self-taught, probably because you tend to develop a personal style if you don't receive other people's influences
BTW, that doesn't mean I recommend everyone to not take classes, it's just not my cup of tea. It's definetely harder to learn by one's own.

Yeah, it is kind of hard trying to find out what you want.
If you want to learn how to play live, then start a band, no matter how much it sucks... playing with other musicians is the best teacher, even if they are worse than you. If you want to learn jazz theory, then you need more than instructional DVDs, you need books on theory. If you want to learn how to be a better guitar player, then get lessons from someone who is kick ass.
But I would always reccomend getting a Flamenco instructional DVD. Supposedly, someone who is considered a Flamenco master can incorporate every possible type of strum into their playing.... and you think, well how many strums can teir be? Im not sure where I heard it, but supposedly it takes no less than 13 years to attain.

Alot of jazz musicians take lessons few and far between. I know alot of people who have taken a lesson every few months from a prestigeous teacher and taught themselves the rest. A good book is key, and with jazz, although a good ear helps a ton, being able to read music and chord symbols is a must if you want to play with in a group. Maybe just see a teacher occasionally for guidance, and tell them first what your goals are.
