Gabe, the lab puppy :)

December 1st, this little guy is arriving at our home. He's about 7 weeks old now, and simply adorable. He's going to live with us for the rest of his life, which will likely only last a matter of weeks, or maybe months if we're lucky. Gabe was pulled by my rescue from the shelter, we thought he was a normal little pup. The shelter employees jokingly called him "Lurch", because his head appeared so much bigger than his body. Turns out, there is a good reason for it - he has a condition called hydrocephalus...massive amounts of water surrounding his brain. We've consulted with a number of different vets, who have all said that his outlook is bleak, at best. There are some cutting edge procedures that involve putting a shunt in place for dogs, but they typically don't work very well, and the dogs are typically brain damaged and have a lousy quality of life. We made the decision to not put a tiny lab puppy through that surgery. He's already blind, but other than that, shows no symptoms thus far. We want him to live whatever time he has left in a home, in a warm bed, carried around all day and spoiled rotten. We've been warned that as soon as the seizures begin, his decline will be rapid and unforgiving, and we've promised that as soon as they begin, we will have him euthanized - but we just can't see euthanizing a puppy that is currently happy and acting normally, aside from his sight. Here are some pictures of the little guy - if you could all keep him in your thoughts for me, I'd appreciate it. We're praying that he spends a few good weeks here, and understands on some level that when the time comes, we're only doing what we think is best for him

Yeah, they hit a soft spot for me too
I feel bad for the little guy, but at the same time, I'm really glad that he's not going to die in some cold dark shelter or something.
Right now I'm ok with the idea of him coming here, us loving him, and him not being with us for long, and it all seems "fine" in my head, but I'm worried that when the time comes to actually say goodbye, I might totally lose it. At the same time though, I'm not about to make him suffer through seizures and that sort of thing, it just wouldn't be right. My worst fear is that something awful happens inbetween now and when he's supposed to get here, and he never winds up being able to make it to my house - that would suck, so incredibly much
The vet techs at our partner animal clinic are wonderful - they have been carrying him around in their arms all day, and their kids come in and play with him too, so he's well cared for....but, they're not open 24 hrs a day, so at night he's in a cage, by himself, in a room with dozens of other dogs barking....I just want him to know what a "home" is, ya know?

If you want to make the trip to Boston, you're more than welcome to come chill with him for however long you'd like
Actually, a few days ago, we got an email from a girl who had stumbled across Gabe's bio on our website, listing him for adoption - we knew of his diagnosis and put on the bio the name of his condition, but we didn't yet realize how dire the situation was, so we hadn't removed him from the adoptable pets list. This girl emailed us and said
"Hi, I was on pet finder and Gabe really caught my eye. Not only because he is cute, but because we both suffer from the same illness, Hydrocephalus. I was wondering if you have decided if he needs a shunt or not. The reason I ask is because i had 3 different shunts placed and non of them worked. They kept getting blocked. I ended up have a third ventricular endscopy. It is basically a laser that opens up a new passage way for the cerebral fluid to flow through. It has been working for almost 8 years now, versus the shunt that only worked for about a month. I know this may be alot, but I figure if it worked for me, it was worth letting you know about it. If I already didn't have 2 dogs I would adopt him in a heartbeat. Could you please let me know how he makes out, I realize that may be alot to ask, but he really caught my attention and I would love to hear how he is doing. Thanks so much,
*insert real name here*
Turns out, she lives about an hour from me, and we're going to try to arrange for her to spend some time with him while he's with us. She's clearly been through so much and is thriving - in a few emails back and forth with her, it sounds like she feels some sort of connection with Gabe because of his illness, and it's important to her to know how he is and I intend to keep her updated. It's wonderful to get emails like hers - gives me some faith that there are still plenty of decent people left in the world.

To OP, i really admire what your doing. I've got a soft spot for animals, and would care for as many as i could if i had the resources (space, money).
Good luck to you and gabe, animals are odd, they can kick on alot longer than you think. My old dog was given 2 weeks to live and battled it out til 4 months (we didn't let him go through pain or agony, he was fine until he started having trouble breathing, thats when we decided it was time).
Once again, good on you!

I've been through what you're going through. My parents use to breed and raise Collie pups throughout my entire childhood, so I was always surrounded by dogs and puppies. Once every litter or so, there would be a puppy with some sort of fault. Everything from this hydrocephalus thing to puppies coming out with the flesh around their bellies non-existent and the innards coming out. Then there would be the brain damaged puppies that came out squealing bloody murder which my parents had to get rid of quickly or the mom dog would freak out.
I remember many times my brother and I would get too attached to the afflicted puppies and would ball our eyes out when they died, most of them only having lived mere hours.
I really respect what you're doing for that puppy.

Gabe is so adorable! You can tell the kid in the pictures really loves him, too.
I think it's great that you are helping Gabe and the girl from petfinder connect. I'd say it's exactly what the two of them need.
It certainly seems tough to adopt a dog that you're told won't live long, but it is such a beautiful thing to give him a good home and let him play with all your other pets before he goes. I know he's going to get a lot of love with you guys.

Hey guys!
Wow, I wasn't expecting this many responses - thanks so much for all of the kind words I believe in the power of good thoughts, and I'm hoping that with enough people thinking about Gabe, he'll have a significant amount of good time with us here. I'm going out today to get him a really warm sweater, because he won't be used to the cold New England weather and whatnot. He'll probably be pretty shellshocked and confused when he first gets here, but I'm hopeful that he'll realize pretty quickly that he's in good hands. The transport company is *hopefully* going to give him some special while he's on the trip up here, so he's not totally freaked out by the 2 day ordeal.

That little boy in the pictures is a saint. He goes to the vet clinic with one of our volunteers, and meets all of the dogs - he hugs them, plays with them, loves them, and it's great too, because we get to see what dogs are good with kids, and what ones might be a bit too boisterous for little ones. Gabe, from what I hear, gets scared when he hears his cage open, because he can't see, but the kid talks in a happy voice to him, and his tail starts going like crazy and he gets all excited that he gets to come out and play

Sometimes it's really hard to draw the line between a flame and someone who just carries a lot of ignorance and hatred. It's usually best just to let that go, unless it's really excessive.
Liz, I'm so proud of you and what you are doing for Gabe! You're like some kind of critter gaurdian angel. It's actually kind of inspiring. He looks like such a sweet little pup!

Thanks Honey
We found out that we have to be careful about him bumping his head, so we'll have to have Lucy and Molly be real gentle around him - or maybe buy him a little doggie helmet? Hah! That would look too funny.
I simply can't wait to get him here. As I'm sure you know, I'll be taking a ton of pictures and I'll post them for all to see

Oh I sure will. My brilliant original plan was to have him wear one of the ones we already have - until I realized that he's pretty tiny. If he doesn't like wearing a jacket I won't make him wear one - I just don't want him to get chilly! I will however, make him keep it on long enough to take some pictures

Blah! Gabe was supposed to leave on the transport tomorrow to come up here, but while doing his physical exam, he tested positive for coccidia, so can't travel until that's cleared up. Poor little guy I guess he'll be coming next week instead.

Is that your son holding the puppy? He should be put on a diet if he's not already on one. I'm not saying this to be mean. I know a lot of people with kids that look just like that and they have diabetes. A very close cousin of mine looked like that as a kid, he's 22 now and his doctor just recently found that he's diabetic. Another cousin of mine has a five month old girl thats overweight and she is already on a diet. At five months old, this kid is on a diet, and its plainly visible that she needs it.
Obesity is such a huge problem now and the problem starts when they are very young, you should try to help that kid out. If that is your child, I'm sure you've already heard this from his pediatrician but you should really keep an eye on that for his own well being.

BoneMan, I'm pretty sure I already discussed the kid in another post in this thread, but no, that's not my kid. I don't have kids. He lives in Tennessee, and is the son of a friend of one of our volunteers.
On another note though, I think that a 5 month old on a "diet" is the most obscene thing I've ever heard. Babies are barely eating any solid foods at that age - what is her mother cutting down on breast feeding??

I have to agree with you on this, Liz. However, it is extremely unlikely that an exclusively breast fed baby (as a 5 month old should be) would become overweight. She is probably formula-fed, and I would hazard a guess that she was started on foods wayyyyy too early.
On topic: I think that you're terrific for adopting Gabe!

Yeah, unless they're feeding her lots of sugary baby food, I can't see a 5 month old baby being considered over weight. And I don't know of any respectable physicians that would recommend that parents put a 5 month old on a diet!
On Topic - Thank you I just went to the pet store and bought some toys and clothes for him for when he arrives. It sucks that he won't be here until next week, but I can wait!

Gabe arrived today. He's freakin precious, and such a nice puppy. He just wants to be held and cuddled. This is not a good news post though - he had a seizure tonight....obviously, I knew this was going to happen, but I guess I wasn't mentally prepared for it to happen the day he got here. It's such a helpless feeling, not being able to do anything. If he continues to seize tonight/tomorrow we're bringing him in to be put to sleep tomorrow, or, if he worsens at all tonight, we'll do it tonight. It sucks, but it's the right thing to do - I don't want him to suffer at all. Right now he's resting, and he could be better tomorrow morning...I'll be watching him closely and see whether he gets better or worse. I took a lot of pictures of him today - I'll post some once I get them resized and stuff.

Yeah, the stress of the transport and being tired and whatnot could have brought it on. I'm praying that he'll get a good nights sleep and feel better tomorrow. When he got here, he could walk (albeit a bit clumsy), was giving puppy kisses, and cuddling with the other dogs...right now he can't even hold his head up, let alone stand. I have him wrapped up in a warm blanket, and he looks pretty comfy, and he's not seizing anymore - just laying still. I feel like maybe I made a selfish choice, having him make the trek up here to be with us, but I also feel like the alternative was having him put down in the vet clinic, so I wanted to at least TRY for him....I dunno.

Gabe just died in his sleep. I was petting him, and telling him he was a good boy and he just stopped breathing. He wasn't seizing, and looked really comfortable, which I'm grateful for. I'm glad he spared me from having to make the choice for him, as to when was his time to go.
RIP Baby Gabe - you were loved

Hey guys,
thank you for all of your really kind words. I was really hopeful that Gabe would be able to spend some time here with us, settle in, and get to live in a "home" environment before he passed on - but I guess it was his time, and I really am grateful that I didn't have to make the call for him and have him euthanized. I feel a lot better this morning, and I guess that I really should have done a better job of mentally preparing myself for what happened. I mean, I knew that in all likelihood he would go downhill eventually, but it just caught me totally off guard that it happened so quickly and horribly. I'm happy that we got to spend a little while with him before he started seizing, and I'm happy that he was asleep when he passed and that I was with him. I would have felt terrible if it happened in the middle of the night and he was alone.
Again, thanks for all of your thoughts and nice words...they help a lot

I'm so sad for you and little Gabe. But you did what most wouldn't do and for that I thank you.
From the looks of it he had nothing but love around him. There is no better or peaceful way to go than with love around you. I'm sure Gabe thanks you.

The dog with the blue collar reminds me of a dog I had growing up. When we would bring him in the car on the way home he would start going nuts once we pulled on to our street so we would pull over and let him out and he would race us home, he always beat us, he was a beast. It was so damn funny how excited he would get once we got close to home.

The puppy, Gabe? Or the Yellow Lab with the dark blue collar? The yellow lab is Lucy, she's ours She's a real sweetie, and is famous for her uncanny ability to clear off a coffee table with one swoop of her tail. We're in the process of having her certified as a therapy dog so that we can volunteer in nursing homes and hospitals and stuff.

The yellow lab, I miss having a dog. Yellow labs can be beasts. We would bring our dog into the hospice too the elderly and dying love having pets around. Were I live they want like $100 extra a month on rent if you have a pet and I can't afford that.

That sucks. The whole bullshit with landlords not allowing pets or charging extra for them is half the reason we bought our own house this year - I love animals and wanted to be able to have whatever I wanted in my home. We just rented our upstairs unit to a girl with a golden retriever, and she told us how she had been looking for months for a place, and no one would allow her dog...it's so sad to me that people are like that. As long as a dog has a good temperament and is trained to not be destructive, I don't see the issue.

Exactly, I mean they replace the carpet so often I don't see how it matters. People tear up the places they rent even more than any dog could ever do. I'm sure I could just never tell them but I don't wanna risk eviction I couldn't come up with the money to move or even put down on a new place.

Yeah, the worst thing to do is try to hide shit from a landlord or management company - if you got caught, every landlord that asked for a reference after that would find out that you were dishonest, etc. That would suck! If you were near Boston, I'd let you get a dog and rent our 2nd unit
