Gabe, the lab puppy :)
    #7660517 - 11/20/07 08:15 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

December 1st, this little guy is arriving at our home.  He's about 7 weeks old now, and simply adorable.  He's going to live with us for the rest of his life, which will likely only last a matter of weeks, or maybe months if we're lucky.  Gabe was pulled by my rescue from the shelter, we thought he was a normal little pup.  The shelter employees jokingly called him "Lurch", because his head appeared so much bigger than his body.  Turns out, there is a good reason for it - he has a condition called hydrocephalus...massive amounts of water surrounding his brain.  We've consulted with a number of different vets, who have all said that his outlook is bleak, at best.  There are some cutting edge procedures that involve putting a shunt in place for dogs, but they typically don't work very well, and the dogs are typically brain damaged and have a lousy quality of life.  We made the decision to not put a tiny lab puppy through that surgery.  He's already blind, but other than that, shows no symptoms thus far.  We want him to live whatever time he has left in a home, in a warm bed, carried around all day and spoiled rotten.  We've been warned that as soon as the seizures begin, his decline will be rapid and unforgiving, and we've promised that as soon as they begin, we will have him euthanized - but we just can't see euthanizing a puppy that is currently happy and acting normally, aside from his sight.  Here are some pictures of the little guy - if you could all keep him in your thoughts for me, I'd appreciate it.  We're praying that he spends a few good weeks here, and understands on some level that when the time comes, we're only doing what we think is best for him

Yeah, they hit a soft spot for me too :frown:

I feel bad for the little guy, but at the same time, I'm really glad that he's not going to die in some cold dark shelter or something.

Right now I'm ok with the idea of him coming here, us loving him, and him not being with us for long, and it all seems "fine" in my head, but I'm worried that when the time comes to actually say goodbye, I might totally lose it.  At the same time though, I'm not about to make him suffer through seizures and that sort of thing, it just wouldn't be right.  My worst fear is that something awful happens inbetween now and when he's supposed to get here, and he never winds up being able to make it to my house - that would suck, so incredibly much :frown:

The vet techs at our partner animal clinic are wonderful - they have been carrying him around in their arms all day, and their kids come in and play with him too, so he's well cared for....but, they're not open 24 hrs a day, so at night he's in a cage, by himself, in a room with dozens of other dogs barking....I just want him to know what a "home" is, ya know?

If you want to make the trip to Boston, you're more than welcome to come chill with him for however long you'd like

Actually, a few days ago, we got an email from a girl who had stumbled across Gabe's bio on our website, listing him for adoption - we knew of his diagnosis and put on the bio the name of his condition, but we didn't yet realize how dire the situation was, so we hadn't removed him from the adoptable pets list.  This girl emailed us and said

"Hi,
I was on pet finder and Gabe really caught my eye. Not only because he is cute, but because we both suffer from the same illness, Hydrocephalus.
I was wondering if you have decided if he needs a shunt or not.
The reason I ask is because i had 3 different shunts placed and non of them worked. They kept getting blocked.
I ended up have a third ventricular endscopy. It is basically a laser that opens up a new passage way for the cerebral fluid to flow through. It has been working for almost 8 years now, versus the shunt that only worked for about a month.
I know this may be alot, but I figure if it worked for me, it was worth letting you know about it.
If I already didn't have 2 dogs I would adopt him in a heartbeat.
Could you please let me know how he makes out, I realize that may be alot to ask, but he really caught my attention and I would love to hear how he is doing.
Thanks so much,

*insert real name here*

Turns out, she lives about an hour from me, and we're going to try to arrange for her to spend some time with him while he's with us.  She's clearly been through so much and is thriving - in a few emails back and forth with her, it sounds like she feels some sort of connection with Gabe because of his illness, and it's important to her to know how he is and I intend to keep her updated.  It's wonderful to get emails like hers - gives me some faith that there are still plenty of decent people left in the world.

edit...

To OP, i really admire what your doing. I've got a soft spot for animals, and would care for as many as i could if i had the resources (space, money).

Good luck to you and gabe, animals are odd, they can kick on alot longer than you think. My old dog was given 2 weeks to live and battled it out til 4 months (we didn't let him go through pain or agony, he was fine until he started having trouble breathing, thats when we decided it was time).

Once again, good on you!

I've been through what you're going through.  My parents use to breed and raise Collie pups throughout my entire childhood, so I was always surrounded by dogs and puppies.  Once every litter or so, there would be a puppy with some sort of fault.  Everything from this hydrocephalus thing to puppies coming out with the flesh around their bellies non-existent and the innards coming out.  Then there would be the brain damaged puppies that came out squealing bloody murder which my parents had to get rid of quickly or the mom dog would freak out.

I remember many times my brother and I would get too attached to the afflicted puppies and would ball our eyes out when they died, most of them only having lived mere hours.

I really respect what you're doing for that puppy.
