If we could only find a way to make the fridge subjugate small brown nations it would be the most American thing ever.

coming in at a retail price of 4 grand.
this is a 2006 article, and granted it is USA Today, but Im sure their facts are pretty accurate.
Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) — The average American home now has more television sets than people. That threshold was crossed within the past two years, according to Nielsen Media Research. There are 2.73 TV sets in the typical home and 2.55 people, the researchers said. With televisions now on buses, elevators and in airport lobbies, that development may have as much to do with TV's ubiquity as an appliance as it does conspicuous consumption. The popularity of flat-screen TVs now make it easy to put sets where they haven't been before.
Rick Melen, a facilities manager, has three sets in the Somers, N.Y., home he shares with his wife. That doesn't count the bathroom set that broke down and hasn't been replaced or the speakers installed near their hot tub, allowing them to watch a wide screen set through a window.
"It's really just a matter of where your living takes place, what rooms you tend to spend your time in," Melen said on Thursday. "Other appliances you can move from room to room but if you have cable, you can't move a television."
His wife might want to watch something while she's cooking while he's got a baseball game on downstairs, he said.
Half of American homes have three or more TVs, and only 19% have just one, Nielsen said. In 1975, 57% of homes had only a single set and 11% had three or more, the company said.
David and Teresa Leon of Schenectady, N.Y. and their four-year-old twins have seven sets, plus an eighth they haven't set up yet. They include TVs in both the parents' and kids' bedrooms, the family and living rooms and one in the kitchen that is usually turned to a news station.
"No one ever sits down for more than a few seconds in this house," said Teresa, a stenographer. "This way you can watch TV while you're moving from room to room, folding laundry or taking care of the kids."
In the average home, a television set is turned on for more than a third of the day — eight hours, 14 minutes, Nielsen said. That's an hour more than it was a decade ago. Most of that extra TV viewing is coming outside of prime time, where TVs are on only four minutes more than they were 10 years ago.
The average person watches four hours, 35 minutes of television each day, Nielsen said.
While people are watching more television, ratings for the big broadcast networks have declined steadily. That's a function of the greater number of channel choices available in each home, the company said.
One new Nielsen finding — that young people aged 12 to 17 watched 3% more television during the season that ended in May than they had the previous year — is a particular relief to TV network executives.
For a few years, Nielsen had been finding that TV viewing among teenagers was flat or even declining, a trend blamed on the Internet or the popularity of electronic games and other devices.
"There are just more opportunities for them to watch whatever they want to watch," said Patricia McDonough, Nielsen's senior vice president of planning policy and analysis.
Oddly, one of the driving factors is teenage girls watching more TV late at night or early in the morning, she said.
Now, I dont watch Oprah on purpose. It is on when I get to work and the bartenders insist on leaving it on. But here is this incredibly powerful tool that can instantaneously reach everyone in the world, and deliver visual and audio information.... and here is quite possibly the most powerful woman in America (maybe even more powerful than the president) on television, who holds so much sway with a majority of Americans.... and all we do is push merchandise. Ok, yeah, oprah has her book of the month, Im sure she encourages lots of people to read books that ultimately dont matter (see: million little peices)...
If you had billions of dollars, a daily show with an audience that will stop eating meat when you say so.... what would you do? would you opt to interview The Beckhams and push shiny merchandise as segways? Make a glorified QVC with a moral message? Seriously.... just like Orgones thread regarding deathbeds.... what would you say when you had the majority of America listening? If you had 30 minutes, and could say anything, with the condition that the worst case scenario is that you get fired and have to find a way to live on the billions of dollars you have accumulated.... what would you cover? what topics would you address? who would you have on your show? what merchandise would you push?

I desperately want out of this country.
I've been thinking about the state of the world lately, and looking at our culture, and I am very, very fucking scared. I don't want to witness the kind of horrible shit that I see inevitably coming.
I'm gonna move to New Zealand. Canada's not far away enough.

People (though mostly unwittingly) are causing the big fuck up, people can change it - if they/you/us want it bad enough.

i was under the impression that new zealand was just as bad. i just did some more research and that was apparently wrong... they are known for being behind the times by not adapting to RFID...
sounds like it may be a great place after all, but the grass really is always greener...

More than anything else I'm scared that we're going to piss off the rest of the world to the extent that they don't care when somebody decides it's time to turn us into a radioactive crater. We've made massive headway toward this point in the last six years.

America is not designed to help poor nations/people. It is designed around consumerism. If helping poor people helped the US thrive the way selling stupid shit like this to millions does, we would be a very helpful nation. Its bred in every american to spend, want, spend, want... If you watch tv or read magazines, or go online, you probably want something.
250 million africans will potentially die from dehydration in about 10 years, and our american refrigerators will be able to bring food to us while were sitting on the couch. You can move away, but its more like running away from a problem. The problem is here for all of us to solve, and it starts one person at a time. Unfortunately me and about 295 million americans are too self-motivated to start helping others at this time in our lives. I feel like a bastard sometimes for it, but at the same time, its very human to want things, and I understand that enough not to hate myself and my needs for wanting stupid shit.
To move out of America because of fear is letting the terrorists win. Fuck them. Any who wants to threaten others physically because of envy is quite the asshole. Ill sit here sipping water from my refrigerators brita water filter while watching them burn to the ground on my HD plasmascreen door.

Where did this come from. And your statement is false. The reason bin laden stated for the attacks, and the reason so many people support him, is america's presence and meddling in the middle east.
Your last sentence shows how you are part of the problem. White people say they care and want everyone to live in peace. they say they care about the envirnoment. they say they care and want noone to starve. But their actions prove otherwise. They don't realize that their way of life is the problem, it's not everyone else failing to live up to their standards.
When I read that It made me very mad, and I'm sure it would make others as well. I hope you rethink your statement and attitude.

The computer I use is one of the few pieces of technology I use. I spend minimally, and I try not to buy things that will go to waste. I won't go on about what I've done to help the world, but my computer is being used very much and is very helpful to me in this ever increasing technology and information abundant era.
The point wasn't about it being technology. The point is it's a reminder of typical american pig headed materialism.

As opposed to what most of the replies have said so far, I'm not sure what's wrong with consumerism. This phenomenon has brought you breakthroughs in many fields, especially retail technology.
You don't like it? Don't buy the shit. It's that easy.

Main Entry: 1ex·cess Listen to the pronunciation of 1excess Listen to the pronunciation of 1excess Pronunciation: \ik-ˈses, ˈek-ˌ\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French or Late Latin; Anglo-French exces, from Late Latin excessus, from Latin, departure, projection, from excedere to exceed Date: 14th century
1 a: the state or an instance of surpassing usual, proper, or specified limits : superfluity b: the amount or degree by which one thing or quantity exceeds another <an excess of 10 bushels>2: undue or immoderate indulgence : intemperance; also : an act or instance of intemperance <prevent excesses and abuses by newly created local powers — Albert Shanker> — in excess of : to an amount or degree beyond : over
That is what it is. Excess. Not everyone can live like this, nor should they. Stupid americans don't realize that they can't live this way and not hurt the earth an their fellow man, let alone the whole world live that way. Not to mention the type of person who would be prone or tempted to buy these things.I imagine overweight stupid suburbanite lemmings who would have everything done for them. The type of people who would drive out to a k.o.a. "campsite" in their rv and call it camping. It's pathetic and disgusting. Certainly not how I want to live my life.

How does one 'hurt' the earth'? The earth has no nervous system and at various times has been frozen, covered in water, and covered in lava. There has been times of no atmosphere, sulfuric acid, methane and ammonia atmospheres. Did any of those conditions hurt the planet?

No actually it doesn't. And even if it did, that is not logical. Your logic is, " it's fine if we destroy the earth because it will just heal itself over millions of years." First of all, no it doesn't. And second even if it did that's just dumb. What about the next generation. What about your generation?? At the rate it's going, the earth will be uninhabitable easily within 1000 years.

I dont think anyone has a right to threaten anyone else, let alone kill others, the mere fact that you think bin laden had a good reason to attack america nullifies pretty much any argument you could state, because it is so illogical it hurts.

I just have a inkling that you aren't doing anything by being on your computer, rather are just saying that everyone else should start living more like you because you think you're right, and thus, everyone whos not doing at least as much or more than you is wrong.
ok ok ok enough arguing though, I apologize, im done.

You said in your earlier post the using the current technology would hurt the earth, and I replied to that. I never touched upon the this or that generation of humans.
Quote:
No actually it doesn't. And even if it did, that is not logical. Your logic is, " it's fine if we destroy the earth because it will just heal itself over millions of years." First of all, no it doesn't. And second even if it did that's just dumb.
Do you any evidence that the earth has not bounced back and life had not found a way after the global catastrophes. And what is so dumb about the earth "healing" itself.

If you despise American so much, why even take part in these threads? Why not turn the other cheek like your Fairy Godfather taught you in the good book?

If you had billions of dollars, a daily show with an audience that will stop eating meat when you say so.... what would you do? would you opt to interview The Beckhams and push shiny merchandise as segways? Make a glorified QVC with a moral message?
She most likely understands her audience better than you think. If you just give out moral messages without some ice cream they will turn to someone who will. She ain't one of the richest because shes stupid. She's working with folk who aren't all that smart or educated (especially emotionally). She gets her message across quite well IMO.

I dont think anyone has a right to threaten anyone else, let alone kill others, the mere fact that you think bin laden had a good reason to attack america nullifies pretty much any argument you could state, because it is so illogical it hurts.
Then why did you originally say that they can burn to the ground? You do't think people deserve to die or be attacked for any reason? I'm not saying bin laden is a good person, or even that he did it. But the people who support him which is not a petty amount of people, they are behind him and he gave his reasons for the attacks. It's not like he's trying to take over america. That would be dumb. They are trying to get america to stop. Go read his letter to america.

f you hate America so much, why are you still here?... Assuming you live in America.
Yes I live in america I was born here to it's not like it's that easy to just get up and leave.
Quote:
And btw hate is a terrible thing - another concept of your deranged argument that shows me you have no idea what youre talking about, but rather are just spewing half-baked trash propaganda out of your keyboard.
No hate, the right kind of hate is a very good thing.

No I really do do things, I just don't like telling everybody because I like to keep it private.

What global catasptrophes? The only global castrophes I see are a big flood and a short ice age. You're asking me to prove a negative.
It's dumb because that's evolution and that's a myth. I'm sure you've heard.

That's a wrong application.
I take part in these threads to express my opinion, to share with others, to hear their opinions, to become more informed.

Very good statements about the Earth itself going through vast changes over the course in time, but I think that Earth is also being referred to as the ecosystem to which our human life is dependent. When jon says we are damaging the Earth, I believe he is talking about the ecosystem.

May be it is time you picked up and read some books on evolution, starting with Charles Darwin, Richard Dawkins and yeah Stephen Gould.
