mushroom acting like an ostrich

In everyone's adventures has anyone come across a mushroom where the pin (cap) never popped up but you can see part of the stem?
I have recently seen this in a casing. It looks like a nice sized stem but I can't see anything except where it started to come up and then grew back down into the casing. What should this person do?
Should it be left alone or dug out?
Thanks y'all.

So, you mean to say that the stem is thick, very tasty looking, BUT the cap area is growing underneath the substrate like it makes a stem arch and thats it? OR the stem inversed and grew back into it's self.. am i catching on? Haven't smoked for a couple days..

Thanks for responding legallyhomeless.
That's what has been done so far. But now the part that is exposed is growing a little myc (like you see at the bottom of a mushroom). The grower isn't wanting it to rot inside the casing but also doesn't want to go digging down and destroy the casing either. They kept waiting for the head to pop up nearby but first flush is almost over and the lil booger is being stubborn.

Hightimesreader: It is arched. Looks like part of the back of the loch ness monster just barely breaking the water.

Pluck it, chances are, that it will not come up, but you COULD harvest that nice stem and then see whats below the stem on both sides after since no stem in the veiw now.. Eat the stem and see whats in the casing

this isnt too relevant. but all my small mushies that never mature fully, i just leave them on the casing layer and it seems like the myc eats them and i wait for the next flush. they say they will rot but i never had problems or mold by doing this. maybe im just lucky

Actually I find that very relevant. Thanks. The myc definitely looks as if it's taken this over. There are enough casings to let this one go as an experiment. It's preferable to digging and thus destroying the casing.

It sounds like a mutant. Just leave it be and pick it when you pick the rest of the flush. RR
