Soul crushing...
    #7659234 - 11/20/07 02:18 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

So i was walking along looking at the trees as i passed by and i looked at this large one. probably 100 ft tall (i'm terrible as estimating height).

On the largest branch i saw a lions mane mushrooms growing off taunting me. i wanted to call the fire department and tell them my fungus cat was caught in a tree. I can't even imagine how hunters that look for actives must feel whenever they see a patch that they can't get to for some reason or another.

Anyone have any tips for getting something upwards of 80 ft up in the air down for dinner?

Oh man, that sucks!!! Those are such good edibles! They tie for my favourite, along with morels.

Is the tree not climbable??
I've climbed many trees for Chicken of the Woods, but I don't like those mushrooms at all.

Yeah, I try not to look into peoples front yards while hunting... It's just too stressful not being able to get at the mushrooms!!!
In desperate times, I have rung the doorbell and asked permission.

I'll see if i can't get a picture of the tree. It is absolutely unclimbable. I would need a large rope, and metal cleats to even think about scaling up it. The lowest branch is at about 50 ft.

I've only found and eaten lions mane once. It was so convenient that time. It was just growing out of a piece of wood in my friends garden. They have board-like things separating the lawn from the garden, and it was just growing out of it. Maybe it'll come back this year.  I'm thinking about cultivation whenever the warmth comes out again.

I've gotta read up on the cultivation of it though.

I've got a bunch of dried morels, but I know they aren't NEARLY as good as fresh. I've found a few morels in the past, but i was in the woods with some friends, and I knew they were edible but didn't know quite what they were at the time, so i just tossed them aside. Poor things . It was only a few tiny black ones, but they didn't deserve it.

How do you cook lions mane? Last time i just fried it up, and it tasted like pancakes. It was delicious.

Indoor cultivated ones tend to lack the awesome flavour/texture of wild ones. So cultivate outside, on whatever their preferred substrate is.

thats what i was planning on. lions mane is my favorite edible as far as I've tasted. I have yet to try fresh morels. I'm also keeping my eyes peeled for calvatia gigantea. I hear it's delicious when it's fried. (i do this to a lot of my mushrooms)

this remind me of once that i found  i patch  of gymnopilus spectabilis in some people front yard in a dead log  , and 3 minutes later i was xplaning the police that i nly try to grab the mushrooms for a mushrooms class of mycology , haha , but i know the felling ..
good advise not to look , but i hunt even in police station there is where i found subbs , people think i´m crazy but don´t think i´m picking magic mushrooms .

Drewwyann .  how good are at climbing with a rope  or you can use a large stick  to reach it ,this is what i do when i was picking  orchids in the  forest, you can´t leave a beutifull catleyya in a dead tree that will fall off ...

but i know how you fell i have left few speciemn of this specie there because of that reason , is like this mushroom tend to do this to hunters,
¡you can´t reach me sometimes i heard then say ¡
uukkk.

all my best

yeah. I'm surprised at the number of people that have absolutely no idea that magic mushrooms grow all over the place. Something like that should be common knowledge, but nobody seems to know.

That's great!!!

Yeah, I hunt government property too, but I got permission when I discovered my largest patch of Cyans growing there.  i was spending too much time there, and was concerned i would be confronted.

I know I'm a horrible person, but beside that, I asked permission.

Also, judging by the couple rotten specimens among the patch, no one else was too keen on collecting them.

Hmm.. speaking of pets, since its possible to train a dog to sniff out bombs and drugs, could you train one to sniff out actives? Go get the psilocybin buddy, go get it!

Hm, too bad you couldn't pick it Drewwyann.

I found a Lions Mane in north Florida once growing from a Live Oak tree. We cooked it up and everyone thought it was absolutely yummy. I myself was not too impressed, not as much flavor as I anticipated, but still good.

Most of my years hunting mushrooms were done in southwest Florida, and I do not believe Lions Mane grow there at all - otherwise I would had found one.

Sorry to hear your find was out of reach.

GG

I've got it!

Find some sticks and rocks, and pile them on top of each other until it's tall enough to reach the mushroom. :yesnod:

men that is great after you cut the mushrooms and cultivate then you can go back next year to see if they have come again it will more easy to reach then, and you can also find some cyan in the pile of sticks and rock , so you will be hunting and creating new habitad, think about it.

i guees is more dificult to train a cat . maybe cure cat can help
