ATX Power Supply to power two computer fans
    #7659080 - 11/20/07 01:31 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Is this over board? And will it consume a lot of electric....?

Also will it generate any heat?

Its a bit overkil, but it will power to fans fine, the powersupply should only draw what it needs for the fans.

so say you have a 200 watt pc supply, its not gonna sit there drawing 200W, only what it needs for the fans.

U could however, get a dc powersupply that is rated at 12v and use that too.

The powersupply itself will generate a little heat from the transformers converting from 120vac (or 220/230) to 12V even a small dc adapter will produce some heat.

But this wont be a problem because obviously will not be in your Fruiting chamber.

two things to look out for, assuming this thread is about actual mushroom cultivation:

1) they do generate a lot of heat, both the power supply and sometimes even the motors themselves. The fan shouldn't be that big of a deal, but definitely keep the power source away from everything, including water/high humidity.

2) you might want to filter air moved by the fan. I would expect any cpu-fan to be extremely dusty, plus if you're moving that quantity of air, you're going to be pumping in quite a bit of contaminates. Why do you even need a fan, really?

---

also, an atx power supply is -way- more than you need for just using two cpu fans. CPU fans use 12v, so I'd say to use two 6-volt batteries cross-wired to double their voltage output.

6-volt batteries:

A small fan is good for Fruiting chambers that cant be fanned out regularly, your more likely to get contams not getting enough FAE. Contams like still stale air. But it wont hurt having some sort of filter to catch large particles. Dont restrict the fan too much as this could burn it out

The best thing to do if you are putting a fan, is to run it on a timer so that it goes on for a few minutes each hour. Just be carefull that it does not effect humidity too much.

Just remember you will need a hole for air to escape as fresh air gets drawn in.

Mine doesn't get hot, and i woudln't consider my fans dusty by any stretch of the imagination. I used a case, swapped the power supply to one with a power switch on it, like the old ones do(my friends and i are geeks) slapped 2 fans in that case and ta-da, its a great food dehydrator

i also use another fan to circulate air around my fc's

I have a 3' x 3' section I found in my house after I bought it that is meant for a water heater. What I did was added a two terre wire rack that I am going to make self invetro growing bags on.

I need the CPU fans to one push around the air and two to bring new fresh air into the space.

I have plenty of old power sources around, some with and without switches.

my humidifier does the air circulation part for me. If I didn't use one, I would probably use fans, but definitely not 24/7. Without a humidifier, you'd need to rely solely on a layer of water/vermiculite to humidify your fruiting chamber, and running fans 24/7 would get rid of all your humidity.

A few options here are to: use a timer; leave them off, and manually run them for a few minutes once a day; use open-air or filtered open-air exchange holes in your grow chamber; use a humidifier.

Plus, if you run your fans all day, you're probably pumping a lot of high-humidity air into your house, which can cause a lot of mold in a closet or bedroom.

The humidity is self contained in the bags..... The fans are just slightly blowing air around

cpu fans move a LOT of air, very quickly. if you're using anything smaller than the size of a semi-truck trailer, this is probably way more than necessary air-flow.

and you didn't mention that you were using bags... how do you plan on using cpu-fans inside bags? I have no experience with bags, however, so I'll sit this one out.

the CPU fan is not going inside bags, it is going outside int he area the bags are sitting...

Figure I will have approx 12 5 LB bags each has a filter patch. The air being moved by the computer fans will penetrate through the filter bring fresh air to the fruits.

I am going to try to get a great result on little to no effort and supplies

I would say just leaving the bags in an open area would be more than enough air flow. Just make sure the filter is near the soil so CO2 can escape.

Other opinions?

LOL!  My first fruiting chamber was based on an ATX Power Supply.  It works just fine.  Take a good look at these pictures and you'll notice the design premise.  I used the power supply just because I have a couple just sitting around doing nothing.  I do have it on a timer and I promise it does just fine!

The power supply gives you the option to really pimp out a fruiting chamber.

That's right. ATX power supplies are a tad tricky when not plugged into a computer. Search wikihow for how to convert atx power supply into a nice benchtop supply.

Green wire tells the supply to turn on, and it is active low so tie it to ground, as black.

Yellow is +12vdc and you would connect the fan between this and a black wire.

Also, switching PSUs need a minimum load to work. I've heard that a 100 ohm 10 watt resistor is good for this. I believe it was hooked up between +5vdc and ground. +5 is the red wire.

^very very useful. Be careful and good luck!

LOL! Yea, I tried to convince MTV to give me a show, but they just wouldn't listen. As far as the jumper is concerned, IT IS THE GREEN AND BLACK. They sit right next to each other on the side that has the clip. If you look at it from the top with the clip side towards you, it is the second and third from the right. I used a small paper clip to jump them, then I just used electrical tape to secure the connection.

Guys, a normal 12v converter costs about a fifth than an ATX power source. There's no reason to use one unless you have one or a few just laying around, like these guys said they did. Keep that in mind.

Oh, absolutely! I WOULD NEVER HAVE GONE OUT AND BOUGHT ONE!! I build computers and Mod cases as another one of my hobbies. I have tons of spare fans, lights, PSU's, and all things to pimp out computers. I just thought that I would have some quick fun on a fruiting chamber. I personally would just buy a VAC fan and hard wire it to a regular plug. This is my preferred fan for other projects that require it.

I am an A+ cert tek so I have about 30 (and that is an understatement) 200w ATX powersuplies around... So I don't want to spend any more $$$

Check out my journal for a better look at what I am going to accomplish
