glad to hear you're doing well.

Yes, I don't just got popping random mushys. Unfortunately i sounded like a dumb jackass at the hospital. He said i should have at least 5 years of experience working with someone who themselves have had at least 5 years experienced before trying to ID anything. I've only had 2 years by myself.

Although he looked pretty  suprised when he asked what the mushroom i ate looked like and i told him Boletus appendiculatus.

If it'll make you feel better, I know professional (PhD) mycologists who have been to the emergency room for mushroom poisoning. As you might guess, they really get their chains yanked hard by the guys there. Nobody is immune to this, it can even happen in cases where the mushroom was correctly identified (as the case I'm thinking of).

Happy mushrooming!

I wonder if it's more often a case of under cooking, or personal sensitivity(allergy)?:strokebeard:

How long did you cook these, and how hot?

I cook my mushrooms pretty well - I cook the water out and then fry them in oil or butter at higher heat. Chefs say that this makes the mushroom hotter than 212 degrees (bs, I think, its not like they are crispy from lack of water), but it seems to work great, breaks down the toxins and chitin pretty well.

In the name of science you could share your butter bolete patch with someone else who likes to eat them all the time, see if they agree with the ID and see if they notice any issues with eating them.

I am seeing a couple of Korean people constantly picking and bagging boletus appenediculatus out the park out back of my house. I finally did a pick on them one day to see if they where indeed boetus, and they where.
Next time i saw the people picking them, i approached them and asked what they did with them. They said they made soup with them, but to be very carful. He tried to explain to me that it had to be done a certain way or you get sick. Same family i see picking Russula emetica all the time. Says he makes soup out of them too. When i asked him about the vomiting associated with Russula's he said he had never had a problem just have to know how to peel them.. This guy was fresh off the boat, couldnt understand him very well.
Glad to hear your OK, but i would have to agree, seems your body doesnt want you trying those buggers again. Once was enough i guess..
Get some rest man.
Peace to the gods!!

i was a little worried when your thread kept going and you weren't responding the other night. good to hear you're okay and that you didn't do something stupid like ingest something you aren't 100% sure of.

i am curious as to what would of happened if you didn't go to the hospital. hypothetically? it was an allergic reaction, is that the same as poisoned, resulting in death? liver failure?
and you have one of the ugliest signatures on this website.

I guess you should just avoid all blue staining boletes.

Look for a mycological society.

One thing is nice about boletes for eating. Even the poisonous ones aren't likely to kill you. The only ways you're likely to die from them is if you're already pretty weak from something else, if you ignore the dehydration from the vomiting and diarrhea, or if you inhale some of the vomit. All that isn't to say that it's not pretty awful - by all accounts it is - but at least you're not going to die.

My personal opinion:
Anybody who is going to pick and eat wild mushrooms (for any reason) should be able to describe all of the known deadly species that could be in their area. At a minimum you should be able to be sure that the mushrooms you're thinking of eating aren't one of those deadly species. That doesn't guarantee that you won't be poisoned, but it should ensure that you aren't going to die of a mistake.

Happy mushrooming!

>Alan

I can't agree with you more, when I got out picking, I see quite a few teenagers and I ask them if theyw ere actually trying to identify mushrooms for the sake of learning and they gave me a straight up no, they jsut wanted to get high. Getting high is my goal but I want to study mushrooms to.

Best advice I've recieved. Toxicman gave the advice, now I go to different states to visit mycological gatherings.
One time this old lady (80 something) hosted a gathering at her house where she taught us some cooking techniques. It was very cool to hear about how her and her husband used to hunt the woods.

I would've thought it was a butter bolete too...but luckily, I don't eat anything other than portabellos and psilocybe mushrooms.

In fact, I don't think i even eat portabellos. Nope...
