wildmushrooms?
    #7656670 - 11/19/07 08:24 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

if when growing mushrooms, the process is complicated because the cakes can become contaminated so easily, how do they manage to grow in the wild?

also, when growing for the first time, does anyone know the success rate if one follows the directions well? does anyone know some common mistakes that screw up the process?

the way i see it, there is more space for them and other fungi to live. when its in a little jar, they have to compete for space. but i dunno, thats just me.

In the 'wild' spores colonize a suitable substrate when the environment is favorable. Usually in a state of symbiosis, they find protection from competition by existing in the same space with other life forms that destroy the types of molds/bacteria that we don't like in a mycology lab. This does not happen indoors because we generally sterilize the substrate and environment they we are going to grow in.

As for your second question, most common mistakes that cause failures are not following proper sterilization practices and straying too far away from optimum growing conditions such as temperature, humidity, substrate content etc. (most of which stem from not enough reading on the subject.)

The PF tek was designed for simplicity and easy to follow instructions.

It's like the panda bear. You have NO idea how an animal that lives on one exclusive food source, has one child only per year, has milk so weak that the baby pandas are blind for almost a year, is slow, has no natural defense, and sleeps for most of the day...how does it live?! But you're glad it does .

And I was discussing this earlier today. In the wild you have ideal environments all over the place but you don't notice the ones that are overtaken by bacteria. We can see the mushrooms so we only notice them.

In the wild, a patch of mycelium might produce 100 shrooms that each drop millions of spores and maybe only one or two new patches are created every year from those spores.

from what i've heard allot of molds that attack what we do love the indoors and are more prevalent and strive better inside.
they say UV rays from the sun, fresh air and stuff protects it outdoors.
i heard someone reply - leave a piece of bread inside for a few days. it will probably mold. throw it outside for a few days and i bet it wont.
mother nature doesn't some pretty crazy things. thats why you can take contaminated cakes and make an outdoor bed with them, and they will usually clean up.

Nature has its way of keeping things in line, allowing many things to grow in harmony.
