Fox Farms Ocean Forest as Substrate/Casing?
    #6766901 - 04/09/07 06:43 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

Hi, friends! I am wondering if any of you have ever tried using Fox Farms Ocean Forest Potting Soilas either a substrate for spawn or in a casinglayer. Did you have success?

It contains the following:
A rich blend of organic compost and ocean amendments go into Fox Farm's Ocean Forest Potting Soil. Pacific-Northwest sea-going fish, crab meal, shrimp meal, bat guano and Fox Farm's own earthworm castings makes Ocean Forest Soil provide micronutrients and other powerful growing applications. Also contains composted forest humus and selected peat moss.

I've read folks having good luck with the earthworm casings, humus, and peat moss, but I am a little hesitant about the seafood meal. Also, I imagine this would have to be adjusted for pH since the guano, castings, and peat tend to be acidic.

Thanks for any input on this. Happy growing!

I just used that stuff in my substrate- I am about to case it, it colonized fine. I did 30/30/30 Verm/Fox/Poo. Going to case with peat/verm. I don't know how well it will do. Someone said something about soil not being able to fruit mushrooms. I just have to see how dirt wont work so I did it.

That is not suitable for caseing layers. Cool thing though it has two kinds of bat crap in it, and seabird poo is superior over chicken poo. Sea birds have a very wide diet selection, making their poo extra yummy.

It's for plants. Not suitable for substrate or casing material.

Interesting! Thanks for your feedback. Keep us posted, Civ. Yeah, RR, I was skeptical, too. Glad to see somebody giving it an experimental go at it. I have two bags left over from another project I had to put on hold for a while, so I'm just trying to figure out a good use for it in the meantime.;)

Bat guano is what sent up the red flag.

This stuff works awesome as a case material. Just bake it a short bit to kill anything funky.
