so billy bob asked me to post this up on here...
"hello, there were mushrooms found in maryland, in a lawn. of these, one sporeprint was taken so far.
most of the specimens are brown, like a common u.s. deer's fur. others are a bit more grey or a darker brown.
the one guy that was studied the most:
cap is 4-5 centimeters in diameter, convex. the texture isnt really smooth, but not rough, either.
gills are brown (upon close inspection, black specs were visible), adnate, sometimes slightly sinuate. spore print black, but not like dark-ass jet black.
stipe is about 5-6 cm long, and about 5 mm wide, tan-white-greyish. hollow in the very center, but thick-walled.
doesnt really bruise, some parts where i took of some skin on the stem turned black, but that might be from spores, not really sure.
smells like a wild mushroom.:)
there were like maybe 50-100 other mushrooms growing within a maybe 200-400 sq. ft. plot, some in small patches of 3-10, others in pairs or by themselves.
thankya"

thats one billybob took into account, and its the most likely one because of the time of year, probably. but the spore print isnt brown, or purple as far as billybob can tell. its black.
heres 2 pics
it looks brownish from far away, but thats just because its not a very thick print. up close, its black.

Looks like Panaeolus subbalteatus.
The pictures aren't that clear though, it could also be a Psathyrella species.
Panaeolus subbalteatus will have darker spores (jet black) and slightly different looking stem and gills and sometimes has a darker band around the cap margin.

Try taking some pictures using a camera that has macro mode.
Also make some nice dark spore prints and see if it is jet black.
The differences between Panaeolus and Psathyrella are pretty obvious up close. Panaeolus have a distinctive odor and taste, like tryptamines, while Psathyrella is more bland.

Most semi-nice cameras (over $150) have a macro mode. You can check your manual, or if you lost it do a google search for the model camera that you have and see if it features macro mode.
It is usually the little flower icon, it helps a lot when trying to focus on things that are closer then a couple feet away.
Looking at the additional pictures, I am sure that these are Psathyrella. The veil remnants around the cap margin on the younger caps give it away, also Panaeolus species are much smoother. These have very dark brown spores, Panaeolus will be a shade darker, like charcoal.
If the cap texture is a bit fibrous, they could be Lacrymaria velutina, which is often considered to be part of Psathyrella.

Almost every lawn will have some Psathyrella growing in it from time to time. It is a lot easier to define what a Psathyrella isn't than what it is - If it is small and fragile with dark spores and it doesn't fit into any of the other buckets, then its probably a Psathyrella.
