Bonsai ~~
    #7654726 - 11/19/07 01:17 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Here's my start of my bonsai project, I cloned my dads giant hibiscus, which is very very old and takes up a great big space in the corner of my den. I cut a good sized shooter from a main branch, and then cut it diagonally under cold water. Then just putting it in some starter soil, without adding anything else to it, but some water, and some light. I'm going to do the same thing again, but apply either some rooting hormone or some weeping willow extraction to it, too hopefully get the clone to root. Once it becomes established in the soil, I'll then apply the bonsai technique. I'm adding some other 2yr old bonsai tree's which should be in here wednesday;

Here's the Tsukumo Cypress;

The Kingsville Boxwood;

The light I am using is just a two foot florescnet, with foil on the top of the space and the backside, making the most of the light. I'm assuming being that it is bonsai and the concept itself is that you don't want to make the plant grow that big as it matures, so using smaller light should hopefully assist me in that. I might switch it to a higher power floro, but to me this seems like just enough light for a few tree's. I'm going to go harvest some moss either later this after noon, or tomorow morning, to lay on the sod of the plants.  :muslimprayer: If anyone has any experience or suggestion by all means, I'm ready to indulge.

I'm going to try and clone some other ones, for bonsai purposes;;

Here's what I believe to be a douglas furr;

This is a midwesteren chestnut;

Finally a canadian maple;

I'm wondering, because it is so late in the season, and all the leaves have fallen off the tree's and they' are beginning to hibernate, how these clones will pan out. Has anyone had any experience with this?

thanks, the foil helps a bet to reflect around the corners. Plus its removable.

foil is a poor reflector , and creates hot spots

i strongly disagree with the use of foil, flat white paint will do a much better job

I completely understand, however I'm not about to paint the innards of my entertainment cabinet. heh, if these tree's do well I might move them into a more permanant place with better lighting and what not.

Yeah I sorta figured that. Too be perfectly honest I dont notice any change in lightness with or without the foil.

Do they make grow floro's?

Well the reason I dont think I need such high powered lights is the fact that they are bonsai, you know? They shouldn't require that much light.

you can get 70 watt hps for dirt cheap, and it is probably the perfect amount of light

can you think of a reason why floro's wouldn't work in this situation? eventually I'm sure I'll end up getting something a bit better.

they will work, but the light they put out is much weaker, the only thing flouros will do is stretch your plant, but they can live in that light no problem
