Gymnopilus Luteofolius ID

I believe I have found Gymnopilus Luteofolius. They aren't as red/purple as some I have seen though. Although they do have quite a bit of purple on the stems and the margins.
Location: Central Ca.
Habitat: Found growing directly from an old timber on my property. Type of wood unknown. It has been there for many years.
Spore color is a bright rusty orange.
Gills: Attached, notched seceding.
Taste: Very bitter
Bruising: Some green spots on the caps (I've tried to capture this in the photos) There is some greening at the base of one of the mushrooms. In fact this is the only one I was able to pick with the base intact. The rest were so firmly attached to the log that they broke when I picked them.

Trust me I wouldn't even consider holding you to an ID.

Good, I think we have an understanding! I'm still a learning about wild fungi. Isn't it amazing how in-depth a person can study something when they want it.

Looks like G. luteofolius to me as well.
Any green stains?
And are the caps more red than they are in your photos? Lutes have a brick red cap.

Ala, it is staining green. Enlarge the first picture and you can see, it depends on what screen you have.

Yes there are green spots on the caps and on the base of one of the stems.
The color in the pics is pretty much accurate.
Could be another Gym spec.?

The flesh of the stem is yellow and the flesh of the cap is tannish colored. The flesh of the stem does dry to a reddish purple to almost black though.

The purplish tinges and green spots help confirm that this is G. luteofolius.

sometimes. . . .
lute-o is latin for purple-ish, am i wrong?
their actually maturation colors go from purple when young to tannish-yellow-orange with age.
they are best told from other gymns by their scale-like designs on the cap.
the most bruisable part is usually the scales, and the margin of the cap. followed by pins and mycelium.
the mushrooms featured in el zorros pictures are most definitely mature gymnopilus luteofolius.
about 4dry grams is equal to a level 3 for most people. gymnopilus are commonly referred to as "the earwax mushroom" by people ive hunted with, a name which describes the taste!
