So I step outta my door and close it while it's locked...in my PJs, and socks. Both sets of apt. keys are inside. Landlord had already driven me key set number 2 a few weeks ago when I lost my first set, but later found em. So I obviously didn't wanna call the landlord, and smacked the door with my ass pretty hard. The thing is like balsa wood, it's freakin weak, so it busted in. Now I have a cracked door but it still has a working deadbolt, and a bent and useless knob.
Apparently, doors are pretty expensive. Fuckin damnit! LOL. My ass still hurts, 15 mins later.

MIT Guide to Lock Picking
and no, lock "picks" are not really needed. If you can't find anything to pick with around the outside of your place, it's time to go knocking on the neighbors doors

That happened to me once just under a year ago, I was stuck outside with just jeans on at 4 in the morning, and it was 30 degrees. Had to bust in through my window.

Bump keys are fast, that's where their advantage lies.
Knowing how to pick a lock is a great advantage. If that were me locked out of my house, I would spend the 10-15 minutes it usually takes me to find/fashion some lock picks and get the door open properly. No busted door or broken window required.

Bolt lock? You mean you have a deadbolt on your door?
They're no harder to pick than a lock thats in the door handle. I've got one too and, yes, I can pick it. First time trying it took 5 minutes.

We once got locked out of our apartment block. The inside doors were made of a thick frame but with a thin panneling squares, a bit like a chess board but only about 8 squares per door. So we asked the neighbours for a pair of pliers and a screwdriver and pulled out the nails in the panelling.
Then a light tap and out came a neat square of wood. After that is was easy, just reach inside and open the door. Then another 2 minutes to renail the panelling in and hey presto.
I couldn't stop laughing all through the process, it was so simple.
