Floowhood question? (Updated w/ a new blower)
    #7652312 - 11/18/07 07:42 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

So a friend that works at a movie theater gave me a free blower.  I was wondering what size hepa filter this blower can handle.  Its a Dayton 4C444A.  Here is a pic.

Found a filter that I like here
Is this a proper filter that will work with my blower?
All the info I could find about my blower is here

It's really too small for the smallest flowhood, a 12 X 24. You could try it, but it's unlikely to put out enough air. It's only 158 cfm @ .8" static pressure. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4C444

I just thought that I'd post my experience with getting a free motor.

I opened my phone book one day and decided that I'd call every HVAC place in town until I found one with a spare scrap motor that they'd give me.

Well the very first place I called had one for me! I told them that I was working on a project at the university and was wondering if they had a blower motor they could donate, which isn't entirely 100% untrue. When I got there they gave me a kickass blower motor and didn't even ask me ask any questions, or even seem to care, about what I was using it for.

Here's the motor...

It's a lot bigger than it looks in the picture. Imagine that motor being the size of a standard AC motor. It has no markings on it and the only thing I can really figure out about it is that it uses a GE motor.

I'm hoping that it uses the standard color schemes for the wiring.

Does anyone know offhand what kind of blower it is? I'd love to find the specs on it so I can run it at the right speed and wire it properly.

Anyways, I just thought I'd let you guys know how surprised I was at how easy it was for me to get a free blower motor. I'm sure you could probably do the same.

Shit, I had to pay a little over $100 for mine! I had no choice really. It's the only 1400cfm blower I could find.

If you're using a 12 X 24 filter, look for something in the 300 CFM range @ 1" static pressure. If the motor is rated at .8" that's fine too.

Well guys, I found a free blower...the guy told me it would move ~1500-1800cfm under 1" static pressure on high. Here, ill let the pictures do the talking.

(WiiMotes and lighter used for size comparison)

Now...he also said it was a 3 speed, maybe a 4 speed motor, so here is a pic of the wiring.

(There are 6 colors there. He said black was high speed, and white is prob. my neutral...as for the other speeds, he doesnt know)

Now...for the filter...i am planning on using a FLANDERS Laminar flow grade HEPA FILTER. DIMENSIONS: 24.000" X 24.000" X 5.875"

What you guys think? Anyone know howto build a flowhood that can be broke down w/ latches and gasket seals?

That looks like the same blower that I have... Do you have any info about it? Mine didn't have any stickers or info on it.

Standard wiring says that black is high, blue is medium and red is low. I'm assuming that's what is used on these blowers, but I can't be sure. Different manufacturers sometimes use different codes.

really waiting for RR to chime in...i dont know how i would measure the airflow of this thing to match it up w/ a filter...i know i want a 24"x24" one now thou  would it harm the filter to push too much air through it?  The specs said the test flow through the one im looking at was around 325-500cfm...what does test flow mean?

*edit* just found a link to a pdf on Flanders Filters, turns out the filter im looking at is rated for 500cfm.  Its the GG-D model and is 24"x24"x5.875"...so i dont want to blow more than 500cfm through it...how can i test the amount of air this thing moves?

Since there's five color wires and it's five speed, it's a fair assumption they're all speed wires, although brown is usually reserved for the capacitor. I see purple going to that capacitor, which is strange. For a 24 X 24, you'll need about 400 to 500 cfm @ 1" of static pressure.

You can probably get about 500 cfm from that blower on it's lowest speed. Connect the green wire from your power cord to the chassis, and the white of your cord to the white on the blower, and the black on your cord to each of the color wires, one at a time to determine the speeds. Be sure to cap off each unused color wire to prevent it touching the chassis or another wire. If it turns out your lowest speed is too fast, you can always block off part of the intake to restrict flow.

The lighter test. The flame of a bic lighter should bend over 45 to 90 degrees, but not flicker or blow out. The flame should also have the same shape, no matter where in front of the hood or even up to several inches out from the face of it you place the lighter.

Once you get it all figured out, you can wire up a light switch to be used for on/off.
