I just ordered some half pint canning jars but I believe I ordered the wrong ones :x.
They look like these http://www.amazon.com/61162-half-pint-mouth-mason-jars/dp/B000V5KVDU/ref=pd_sim_k_img_30
Would I still be able to get the cakes out of them?

the link you gave us states that the product you bought is "Ball 61162 half-pint wide mouth mason jars."
since they are 'wide mouthed', you shouldn't encounter any problem with that.

The description says wide mouthed. That means the hole is bigger than the area where the cakes will be

yes well I don't beleive the ones I got were widemouth, and even in the picture there, you can tell that the area inside is sort of square shapes and the opening is circular

my buddy got some of these from wal mart. they do say wide mouth and indeed they are wider than the regular mouthed jars. but if they are the same ones as my friends they wont work. the body of the jar is wider than the top therefore the cake will not come out without destroying it.

haha you can break them once your cake is fully colonized but that would defeat the purpose of a reusable glass mason jar

if they shrink enough while colonizing, you might be able to get it out with some force. you could also crumble them and case them.

you can fork them out, breaking them all up, then turn that into a casing. if its your first try its gonna be a challenge. buy some microwavable 1 cup plastic tupperware containers at walmart if you cant find 1/2 pint glass. they can be PCed, are cheap, reusable, and work quite well.

The walmart in my area carries the same "wide-mouth" canning jars... Wide mouth my ass. I have to order some online.
Good luck!

But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. Also he got a race car. Is any of this getting through to you?

or make half pint grain jars, or make the cakes and break them up with a fork once they are fully colonized and use them to spawn to bulk substrate.
