Coir will work well alone with just a little ?hydrated? lime gypsum to balance ph long and short term. A little coffe grounds like 10% for nutriants. I heard vegtable oil works well to make places for the mysc to get from peice to pice but I think that was a straw tek. I been gone for a few months so im a little rust so dont kill me if I got anything wronge,

I made a coir bulk substrate recently.
It was
Coir Vegetable Oil Lime Spent Coffee Grounds
None of the quantities I know as I was very random about it.
I'd say the spawn ratio ended up being about 20:1 (coir:colonized substrate) so I'm guessing it won't make it

For what it's worth, it always works quite well for me without any additives. I don't usually case it, either! I think most people would call me weird

Spent coffee grounds for an extra boost of nitrogen and a bit of vegetable oil for essential lipids.

What I have done is mix 70/30 coir/worm castings. The castings would do the same thing as coffee grounds, which is raise the nitrogen level, because as I understand it, coir is low in nitrogen. I think next time i will do something like this:
By volume: 60 - coir 20 - castings 10 - verm 10 - gypsum
RR says 10% gypsum by volume. It adds calcium, and increases yields.
P.S. Wow. I am tripping balls, and typing is much harder now than it used to be.

What I said is best. Because I said so.
Go to the store and buy some worm castings, or go to Starbucks and ask them for some of their grounds. It's all good. But you can get by without the nitrogen boost that they will give.

Without the nitrogen boost, third and fourth flushes are said to be lacking potency.
My devilmix smells a bit off today so I'm going to go ahead and say be a bit more diligent than I was (not hard)

Coir is too fucking expensive to use on its own. Cost me $10.95 for 2 bricks.
The way I see it, you could risk the lack of N2 by using coir alone, or, you could add a small amount of coffee grinds(seriously, who doesn't have this) and be on the safe side that is backed by documented success.

Coir is very nice with compost that's been composted to dirt-like consistency or bagged manure. I love to use it to aerate a bulk substrate that would otherwise become too muddy when hydrated.

You only use a little vegetable oil and gypsum, not sure exactly how much though

Coir is costing you? Damn, here in Australia we get it for less than two bucks a brick. And that brick makes 2 gallons of hydrated coir...sounds like you guys are getting gypped! Or maybe its just because we're so close to Indonesia, where most of the stuff comes from...
Anywho...RR says that Coir is pretty much as good as hpoo, and that hpoo is inferior to cow maneur and only preffered because of its texture. So if you live near some pasture go and collect some dried cow pats and pasteurise the crud out of them - you'll have sweet results no doubt!
Cheers all - boingkster

Coir, perlite and vermiculite with bran and blood meal is my style and it works great. Almost too great. The little devils push against each other so much they get all bruised up.
