Hi, I%u2019m sam. Ive never had experience with mushrooms but I%u2019m very curious. When a big patch of mushrooms showed up in my friends backyard I photographed, picked, and then wrapped up some samples in newsprint. I wanted to check to see if these are any sort of 'magic mushroom'. I'm new to terminology, so I tried to take some really detailed shots.
Habitat: Norfolk, Virginia, USA. Found November 17th in a friend%u2019s backyard. We've been having moisture/rain lately, on and off... This was just in her lawn and extending down a slope which leads to a creek. Its funny because the mushrooms actually made a path to our favorite smoke spot down there.
MUSHROOM #1

* Characteristics of the gills: color as seen in photos, deep brown and dusty black. gills dont really touch the stem and caps are easily removed from the stem. * Characteristics of the stem: tan color, hollow, stringy but a little tough. * Characteristics of the cap: yellow tan color. some are nipple shamed. slight slight slight curl under. * Spore print color (very important!): In the process of making these! * Color that the mushroom bruises: darker greyish brown. * Scent of the mushroom: weird, earthy, organic... I can't really explain it.
MUSHROOM #2

* Characteristics of the gills: once I removed the cap I kinda had to turn it inside out to get a look at the gills. They're smooth, fluffy (well, they feel like bird feathers), somewhat densly packed. They are a deep brown. They arent attached to the stem. * Characteristics of the stem: flimsier than mushroom #1. very stringy, tan colored, hollow. * Characteristics of the cap: deep brown, a little black. tightly turned under at the edges. * Spore print color (very important!): Im making spore prints right now. I%u2019ll update when theyre ready * Color that the mushroom bruises: tan bruises darker tan :/ * Scent of the mushroom: a little musty/natural/organic like I said before. * Anything else you might find important: they're so cute I couldnt stop taking photos of them :p
MUSHROOM #3

* Characteristics of the gills: deep deep brown almost black * Characteristics of the stem: light tan when picked, stringy, hollow, bruise to a darker tan. * Characteristics of the cap: rounded or flattened out, edges curled under * Spore print color (very important!): I%u2019m making spore prints right now. I%u2019ll update when they%u2019re ready * Color that the mushroom bruises: * Scent of the mushroom * Anything else you might find important

According to Species Fungorum the current name is Lacrymaria lacrymabunda. cactu, they were Psathyrellas for awhile, so it's appropriate to think of them still as Psathyrellas.
Happy mushrooming!
