Good news! Very happy!
    #7651450 - 11/18/07 03:50 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I inoculated 6 pf jars for the first time last Sunday with Brazilian spores courtesy of spores101.com. I do not have a incubator to keep the jars and substrate at about 80-85 degrees so i had to settle on 74 degrees at average.

long story short. today, not even 5 days later, i can already see mycelium growing in EVERY jar. One jar surprised me the most! It has half of its outer surface colonized ALREADY and thats ONLY at 74 degrees and no more.

I will take pictures later on tonight or tomorrow morning because i have a lot of work to catch up on.

Thank you fellow shroomery members for all your support and assistance, and for all of your help i will be making prints and sending them out for free when im done. Also I am going to put together a grow log.

cheers,

bzl.

I'd keep an eye out on that jar that you said had colonized so quickly. When jars colonize so rapidly, it can often be a contaminate that hasn't sporulated yet. Don't mean to scare you. Like I said, just keep an eye on it.

Hunter, when I'm done ill certainly send you a print

actually the jar is colonized faster because when i inoculated, i moved the needle left to right just to test it... and just as i thought, it took over a larger area, however... I'm pretty sure it will end up being contaminated.

All of my mycelium is white, I,m scared it might be cobweb, however its not blackish its just really thin fuzz at some points and you can see the substrate on the other side (making it look darker, but an illusion probably?). I just took pictures, there with flash so there a lot whiter than what they look like, however there is one without and you can be the judge.

how do i upload the pictures?

cheers,

bzl

Jar 1 (with flash)-

Jar 2 (with flash)-

Jar 3 (with flash)-

Jar 4 (with flash)-

Jar 5 (without flash)-

Jar 5 (with flash)-

jar 6 (with flash)-

My Homemade incubator:tongue:-

Jar 5 is the fast colonizer... i turned the needle left, then right, in the inoculation area as a test. its either cobweb, or its a breakthrough?

im thinking posible cobweb, but what do i know :) I'm just a well informed newb!

cheers,

bzl

opinions?

Oh yea, by the way all of them look exactly the same as Jar number 5 (besides size). They are all whitish fuzz with strong white (opaque, probably rhizomorphic) mycelium underneath in chunks or nuggets.

looks fine to me. By jiggling you will have spread the solution over a greater area probably speeding colonisation. The top verm layer probably wasn't disturbed too much so you probably don't ave to worry

Oh and get that foil off the lids, you are preventing proper gas exchange and can risk your jars stalling.

The dry verm layer is your contam barrier

yeah the foil is not needed after inoculation. The dry layer of vermiculite gives the mycelium all the protection it needs.

ok yea i just read up on it, i removed the tinfoil. Apparently its more about letting out excess condensation then letting the mycelium breath.

what if you have grain jars with no verm layer should you remove the tinnythen?

Well Milkman, what you should do is use a sheet of tyvek between the lid and the lid ring. Barring that, leave the foil on.

I also just started with the Brazilian strain. I like it much more then the B+ because the time to colonize my grain jars was cut in half if not more. But I find at 81-83F I get better results.
