got prescribed to xanex tho, SCOOREEE
i ve tripped under 10 times and i never feel i can just spontaniuously trip off some of my hard work...i love the hobby more than the product it seems sometimes.

I prefer a completely spontaneous trip, all of my best times have been trips where i'll get a call out of the blue saying that "~~~~" is available. As long as im not in the middle of a complete shit storm, or depressed, then a spontaneous trip is amazing.
I feel it's better like that because you don't have time to psych your self up for the trip and you don't end up having false expectations. Also i know personally i get extremely happy upon finding out i will be tripping, i like when i still have that glow as the trip starts. Not that i wouldn't be excited if i had planned to trip a week ahead but i would be in a totally different mentality that way.

If I have the time to do it, a nice, fairly secluded (hopefully natural) setting and nothing bothering me mentally, I'll usually be up for a spontaneous trip. There's no harm in preparation, though. Meditation and a focus on positive energy beforehand can be very useful.
When it's not a good idea for me to trip, I tend to have an inner voice telling me this before I ingest anything, so I just won't do it. Usually it's obvious if something is off- you just have to be on the lookout for it.

For me the preparation is all about letting go of expectation. I sit lots of zazen (2-3 hours, twice a day), and I like to cut myself off from all media.
I find regular daily meditation most excellent. Crash diets nor cram sessions seem to work.
When I do this, preparations tend to take care of themselves.
