Ignorance is bliss.
    #7649674 - 11/18/07 12:20 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

When someone says this, I feel very ignorant because I do not know what they are talking about.

If ignorance is bliss, are you omniscient?

And if not, then are you currently blissful?

Please expound the wisdom of that statement in words that my [currently] unblissful self can grasp.

ignorance is bliss because an ignorant person knows no better (not in a sense of 'goodness' or 'rightness')

I have to assume that you're talking about gambling. And if you're not, that sentence just does not make any sense.

Well, if you have no idea that there is anything beyond what you already know and understand, and you believe that what you've got is the best there is, there's no reason to despair or strive or be discontented. That's the meaning of it. I think it's dumb too, but it makes sense. I just don't find it appealing, and besides, there's no going back. Alas, I'm doomed to being aware and insightful for the rest of my miserable existence. :undecided: :smirk:

If one were ignorant of evil in themselves, which means they knew it not, it would imply that they only know good in themselves. And knowing only the good in yourself would lead to a state of bliss.

So ignorance of evil in oneself is bliss.

Evil in oneself? What exactly do you understand by that?

Anyways, my take on this saying is that one who chooses not to take to account facts, question what is being presented to him, remains in a state of naivety and therefore one doesn't have to deal with doubt and uncertainty, fears and anxiety.
Being ignorant is a form of escapism.
From this perspective, one could say that ignorance is bliss.
Though I don't really agree with this conclusion.

Ignorance i.e to ignore.

If you ignore evidence to the contrary of your beliefs then you can retain your beliefs.

It is bliss because you never have to accept that you are wrong but others will see your ignorance.

Exactly.

This is the flaw of so called skeptical logic that I'm constantly trying to point out!
If you are certain then you are not open to change - thus ignorant.
If you are open-minded you belief nothing with certainty but you also have to deal with the fear and anxiety of not knowing!

There are endless facts, endless lines of questioning, and many ways to see one thing, thus we are essentially ignorant. Why are we are not experiencing infinite states of bliss (doesn't sound too dumb, in my opinion)?

I would say the opposite is true. Lack of ignorance leads to blissful states. It is because we are not aware of the depth in our own thoughts, actions, and other habits, that we are ignorant of their root causes, and of their consequences. Attention to detail gives a much more sophisticated, elaborate buzz, in my opinion.

Heresy.  It does not get any better than Budweiser, nachos, and NASCAR.  I refuse to believe there is a better buzz out there.  Church is ok too, if it's the right denomination.

But you see, Budweiser empties, only so many nachos can be eaten, and NASCAR (although, long and extremely drawn out) will end. These do not offer complete happiness.

I had an epiphany lately(not sure if thats the right word)...

Those who think/know ignorance is bliss usually are smart, philosophical people. while those who hate ignorance are of lesser intelligence.

I had another one...

Those who are ignorant want to not be ignorant, because they wish to see the world in a complicated way, while those who are not ignorant want to be ignorant because the world seems so simple from that viewpoint...
just my 2¢

Ignorant or not ignorant of what, exactly?

Not.
Those who say that ignorance is bliss are probably facing some tough issues and they're somehow aware of their magnitude and they also realize that if they were not aware they would be happier. This is also a form of escapism.

Those who are ignorant of Jesus Christ as their Shepard and Savior, are going to eternally burn in the eternal fiery pits of hell, for all eternity!
