How to make an incubator for under $40

Heres a short write up on how to make an incubator. This is my second write up. My first write up was on how to make a glovebox.
The tools you need are. 1 can of flat black spray paint($1),Razor knife($1),Rubber made container with raised up lid($7),adjustable aquarium heater( I forgot the wattage)($20),Temperature and humidity monitor($3),Small plastic container($3),2 two inch screws.2 small bricks($1)
Take the rubber maid container and spray paint everything but the inside. Then spray paint the top of the lid only.

Wait till its dry then add two bricks like so.

Now suction the heater to the inside. Then drill a hole at the top of the container for the cord to go through. You can seal up the hole with silicone or duct tape. Now add water to the top of the heater. You can add a teaspoon of bleach to keep the water from growing any algae or mold.
Get a lid thats looks like this and cut a slit on both sides.

Take the screw and screw it into the plastic.Bend it over the plastic so it stays proped up. Now you can adjust the size of the opening in the lid for humidity.Get a longer screw if necessary.

Put in the smaller plastic container and add your jars. Also put the temperature monitor in with the jars. (THE JARS WITH BE 2 DEGREES HOTTER)

This is what it will look like when your done!

Very interesting. How important is an incubator if your using liquid culture to inoculate the jars?

You should have an incubator LC or not. It is going to speed things up for any king of inoculation.

Why the hell would you need to adjust the humidity of an incubator?
Humidity doesn't really play any role until fruiting, unless you have your jars sitting around open, they'll retain moisture just fine without you magical "humidity control slot".

I agree, you have a nice setup but forget about the humidity here, save it for the FC. 95-100% But nice none the less

Not true, with an incubator it can be easy to heat it up to the point where contams can grow very well. RR says that you can grow just as well without an incubator. Considering your houses sits in the 70-80 temp range. You will only speed it up enough to maybe shave a day and a half off your time. I never take my incubator past 77 allowing for a 2-3 degree temp difference inside the jars(79-80). But good luck, L.E.

Well I live in the desert. Its very dry here and easy to dry out the substrate. Adjusting the humidity is important. My jars also have four 1/2inch holes in them. From what Ive read you want about 70% humidity.

just make a simple TiT, it doesn't cost much, just get an aquarium heater and two tubs and a thermostat, stable temperatures all the way.

TIT is basically what it is. I use the bricks for two reasons. #1 because Im using a smaller tub inside keeps the jars from flipping getting water logged. #2 The bricks retain the heat.Reducing the amount of times the heater has to click on.

I see, do what works for you! But I think I would adjust my tek for humidity loss. But all is trial and error and if it works don't let anyone tell you otherwise..

wow the brick idea makes sense actually, never thought of that. my problem with the TiT was that after i didn't have any cakes left the water in the tub got dust and whatnot settled in it and looked nasty. i'm guessing the bricks will make the water soggy as well but even then it shouldn't matter because the incubating jars are well sealed.

I dont think that jars would dry out easier in a dry enviroment, i may be wrong, but the moisture is sealed within the jar and i doubt that the inoc holes are enough to let the moisture escape.
Incubation is un nessary unless u are working in an area that is not heated, for example maybe you have your garage as your lab, then maybe its nessesary.
For most room temp is absolutly fine.

Im growing Pan cyans. So I added horse manure to the substrate. The smell was giving everyone in the house bad headaches.I believe its the ammonia in the shit. I was asked many times what are you making? I just said I was trying to grow japanese mushrooms. So I moved everything into the garage. If I didnt add the horse shit I could have just kept everything in the house.

My apartment was just at 75 and my jars were colonizing so slow, as soon as I put them into an 80 degree TiT they colonized very fast. Look at the graph that shows myc growth vs temperature, a few degrees makes it grow much faster. You should definitely get two of the same tub, when I did it like you did it gets very nasty and i'm sure it's much more likely to get contaminated.
2 tubs and a heater at walmart will be like 25-30 dollars, then you just put two half pint jars in the water they are the perfect height.

My poo smells nice! Actually it kinda smells good, like healthy earth. Even after I pasteurize and mix, the stuff smells fine. I think it's mainly because the horse poo I get has been sitting there for years. Big ass pile, and the farmer even told me where the really old stuff was. He was like, "you might better use the shit from over yonder, its been there for years." hehe.
I guess the point is, get good poo, and your housemates won't notice it at all. But if you garage works go with it I guess.
