do i have to pick all those aborts!?
    #7648767 - 11/17/07 07:50 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

i recently, yesterday, harvested my first bulk grow. a total of 5 square feet and 7 dry ounces. woo hoo! my substrate is wbs, horse shit and wheat straw. my casing is coir and verm. even though most pins matured there are still lots, and i mean lots, of aborts. i read lots of posts but can't figure out my next move before second flush. some posts have suggested that those aborts will fruit in flushes to come. do i have to pick them all? alot of substrate comes up even wile trying to be careful. should i just patch and put them back to fruit? i'm not sure of what to do, but i must do something before my exposed substrate gets infected. please, some experienced help is needed asap!

There is a difference between aborts and dormant pins.  Bulk cased like that will set pins for the first and second (and sometimes more) flushes all at once oftentimes... you still WILL get true aborts however - these can be identified by a halt in growth and almost always a very dark (almost black) cap. Pick them before they start to rot and save em for a special night .  But do NOT pick ALL the pins from your bulk casings; you will significantly diminish (if not destroy) future flushes. Just be careful, look at some pictures to see the clear difference between still healthy dormant pins and aborts, and enjoy your grow! :mushroom2:

I am sure that a search on this topic would reveal some more results; possibly even some pictures showing the difference as well. I'd give it a shot.

I don't know that you've completely "screwed up" future flushes... I don't know what happens if you clear your casing of every single pin... I'd imagine some will still come up, probably just not as thickly... but don't quote me on that. I would definitely patch, rehydrate if the casing, and put it back into the FC to continue allow it to continue to fruit if it's going to. Good luck man!

You do need to pick aborts... they have stopped growing and thus are a vector for contaminates eventually as microorganisms will move in to eat them up if you don't! lol :tongue2:

(and make sure that you only pick the black headed aborts that have stopped growing altogether -- leave pins for future flushes behind and gently patch around them if needed)
