Cobweb Mold Nightmare!!
    #7648103 - 11/17/07 04:32 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Hey, everybody. I've never posted on here before, because I usually find my answers in old threads, but I'm officially stuck this time! Can anyone tell me what can cause cobweb mold to appear over and over again all of a sudden? For years, I've had little problems with contamination, and suddenly now I'm having to throw out my jars constantly! I'm not doing anything differently than usual... can jars just get too old? Is there such a thing as too much sterilization?? I tried using a smaller ratio of water, longer boiling periods, etc.. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I'm not even sure if it is cobweb mold... can anyone tell me what type of contamination this looks like?

I don't know but the tinfoil comes off after they cool down so air can get in . You wont need the tin foil on it to keep the stuff out you put a dry layer of verm on top right? Try and post this in the contamination forum and you will get lots of help

Something isn't getting sterilized properly along the way. It could be your substrate, your needles, your spore solution, your LC...

What is in the jars?

Do you use a glovebox?

What do you use to inoculate?

I use brown rice flour, distilled water and vermiculite. I don't use a glovebox, cuz I've never really figured out how to make that work, but I work in very sterile conditions and I've never really had a problem with contamination until my last few attempts.

In between inoculations, I wipe the needle with peroxide and occasionally heat the needle and give it a few seconds to cool down.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the jars or the substrate and not the spores or inoculation, because the last time I tried, after they were boiled, I held off on inoculating. After 2-3 days, they all were beginning to grow SOMETHING... it looked like fog, but it was growing like mold. I'm so thrown off! Oh, and yes, I put a layer of verm. on top, and I also posted this in the contamination forum earlier, but no response.

i'm not too sure what sort of contamination that is. however. I strongly endorse the use of a glovebox and all the supplies can be easily obtained for less than twenty dollars in most cases.

I myself had been constantly plagued with contams, yet with my new glovebox which isnt even fully sealed, it provides a safer, cleaner environment with less chance of airborne contams getting to your needle or otherwise. Just a tip I practice, I always flame sterilize needles inbetween jars and wipe with iso to cool down the needle.

maybe its the Ball jars, try Kerr

seriously now. maybe you have a strong source of the contamination somewhere in your residence

did you say after they were boiled. this can very well work but pressure cooking will be even better.

It's not cobweb. The only thing you've been infected with is Mycelium.

Have all the contaminated jars come from the same batch of syringes or LC?

If you made the syringes yourself, maybe some cobweb or other contam spores landed on your prints and are now mixed up in the syringe

Boiling is a poor substitute for sterilizing.

Mould after sterilising with a pot or PC usually indicates the spores got into the jar after sterilising, usually at inoculation.

The mold is growing down from the top. It looks like you either forgot the dry vermiculite filter, or allowed it to get damp by leaving the foil on. Either will allow mold mycelium to take over the substrate.

Well, I realize that a PC would be better, and when I can afford one, I'll definitely make that change, and I'll read up on how to make a glovebox, but what your seeing on the top is just mycelium.  The contamination is everything else.  These are 3 jars that were inoculated before contamination appeared, but I later found out that it was growing before I ever inoculated.

I think I'm just going to try and get the PC and make a glovebox, try again, maybe in a new room, since this new room I use seems to be cursed!  And I'll just hope whatever it is stops.  Thanks to everyone who took the time to help.

Well, I did try replacing the syringes and the spores and even the strain, but like I said, the contamination is happening before I even inoculate the jars.

Is the rice flour from the same batch? Maybe you got a batch of flour with a high spore count...

It's not from the same batch, but it's from the same shipment to the store.... I'll start from scratch with new flour, too, just in case.

If the contamination happens before you inoculate, then you're either missing a filter or not sterilizing properly. Steam for 90 minutes after the steam begins escaping from the lid. I elevate the jars completely out of the water, so only steam gets on them, but it's important not to start counting the 90 minutes until steam begins to escape from the lid. This is usually several minutes after the water itself starts boiling.

Wow, now I feel retarded, my first set of PF jars are 20 days old. I thought you had to leave the tin-foil on. Just removed it today, and it looks like some of the verm on top is a little wet. I hope they don't all contam. They are covered with about 95% mycelium so far.

I wouldn't feel dumb at all! You just said that was your first set... I can't count how many times I've done this and I'm STILL leaving the tinfoil on! But in my defense, there was a website I took some notes from when I was just starting, and the person on that site said it didn't matter if you left it on or not, so I've always done it that way, thinking it was extra protection for the mycelium. You learn something new every day!

Oh, and I think your cakes are going to be just fine if they made it that far without contaminating.

Some people dont have problems, i have always left the foil on, but left in on loosely just incase something drops its way in.

I do remember though that 1 jar when i opened it had a small ball of green mould in the verm layer, im guessing the perlite got damp and alloud a little to germinate, the cake was fine though and got 2 nice flushes from it.

Make sure that u clean all the verm layer of your cake.

Next time im gonna leave the tinfoil off
