Oats! Some results w/pics thus far. . .

I've really been interested in the use of Oats as spawn. I was thinking that oats have always been said to be "nature's grain of choice" for it's wholeness and fullness of nutrition so it seems a shame that not more people are trying it out.
So I decided to experiment a bit without using any specific tek.
I went through the search feature and found very little useful information on making viable oat spawn - As in a recipe other than just simply replacing the 1/4 BRF with Oats of somesort in the PF-TEK.
Anyway so I'm looking through my grain/flour/sugar/spice cabinet and low and behold what do i find but a box of 100% Wholegrain Steel Cut Oats! I know that grains need to be soaked to get the proper moisture content but I didn't want to be working with sloppy-ass "oatmeal" in the end so I didn't do this.
I put the entire contents of the box (1Lbs) in a pot and filled water to probably twice the level of the oats and simmered for 20 minutes. I added about 5 crushed egg shells to the oats thinking that they'll help to create spaces in the possible slop to come. (oh and the pot got 2 cups of coffee(brewed) as well) After 20 minutes i strained them in a strainer that was fitted with a big-ass coffee filter because this shit was slimy as hell - a pre-rinse may have helped prevent this?
Next I put it all back into the pot that it had simmered in and began adding Verm to bring it to a manageable moisture content. When the mixture was fluffy and "crumbly" I loaded it all into 4 various sized jars PK-TEK style, airy and topped with a verm layer. I then steam sterilized all four jars for 3 hours.
I would like to note that although the oats were "slimy" the grains themselves were still rather hard when squeezed, these steel cut oats were very small pieces of whole oats chopped up into bits. The entire thing has a very nutty - earthy smell it.
After Steam Sterilized (w/PC)i let cool in glove box to await LC. Meanwhile I opened the smallest jar as my intention was to use it as the test jar (only 1/2 pint jar used) to check the moisture post sterilization and it seemed just right and not slimy at all! After I injected them I shook them up before putting them on the shelf since this is what i've read to do with Grains - but looking back now I don't think i should have done this because it only compacted the jars! D'OH!
I of course expect failure from this. My grains began to look on the too wet side from the outside of the jar but smell wonderful!
____________________
Well now it has been 4 days since the jars were innoc. with LC and last night i went to move them to another shelf of little 1/2 pints and i saw the tell tale signs of GROWTH!! This was last night!! 3 days after they were shot up!! I have growth on my Oats! WOO!!
I'm still expecting failure but i wasn't expecting ANY kind of growth other than some dank nasty shit! I'm very excited that my first experiment has shown at least a semi-positive start! (not getting my hopes up but it's exciting still)
I'll post some pics when I get some batteries for my camera! I'll keep adding here with the results of this experiment, even when it turns horribly south.
Edit: Pics I was wrong about the third and biggest jar. No signs of growth. Do they look too wet?
I'm pretty sure this would work great done in 1/2 pint jars as spawn! The trick will be getting the right moisture! (3 w/foil lids)

edit: update2 days later Still going and there's a few spots in the quart jar near the top that are slightly visible in this shot.

I would like to note that the jar on the left is on it's 13th day and is half the size of the smallest oat jars. It has been done PF-Tek with multi-spore while the oat was PF-tekish with LC.
UPDATE 12-7-07
I didn't get any pictures of the Pint Oat Jar at 100% colonization and the other two jars are still going strong but taking their time.
The Pint Jar has been dunked and crumbled to some composted cow manure that I bought for 50 cents at lowes. 4 cups manure (sifted) 2 cups worm castings 1 cup verm
This is 3 days after spawned to manure/wc/verm.

gypsum is still on my list of things I need to get. That and some ph test strips.

Sounds like a great experiment. I look forward to reading on your future variations of this "tek".

Thanks! I doubt very much though that it'll ever be any kind of tek. I think i got lucky so far. Hopefully the growth keeps it up, I swear there was a little bit more this morning!

Well the slow growth this time may just be from excess moisture. The next time with the gypsum included, it may produce crackerjack results.
Keep us posted! The various methods people pursue during growing is my favorite thing about this community.

That's cool I know what you mean, it's fun to experiment!
BY THE WAY: The Jars are 2 Pint sized and 1 Quart for 3 jars total. I think the Quart showed it's first dot of growth at one of the innoc sites this morning! That means the war is on inside three jars with visible mycelium! Fingers crossed!

You might find some success with this. I think shaking the jars was unnecessary as they were PF style and probably already compacted. You shake grains such as Rye and WBS because of all the extra air space inside your jar allows you to do so, and because grains such as those wont compact the same way PF-style jars might. Well and of course to distribute your spores, LC, whatever your inoculate is. I like to see people experimenting, keep it up. I'll cross my fingers for you on this one

Gypsum doesn't "control" humidity.
It is used as:
A) An anti-clumping agent in grains
B) A pH buffer
C) A Calcium and Sulfur supplement

And the shaking also moved my verm barrier at the top which makes me very nervous since the substrate changed shape after shaking!
I knew it was a mistake immediately after I shook the second one so only two were shaken.

Update with picture check out the first post.
God I really wish I hadn't shaken these jars I think they would be colonizing faster. I'm just very thankful that they are still going!

I'll have to look for that thread later when i've got some time. I'd much rather follow a recipe than just feel it out but feeling it out is kinda fun.
Still a recipe would be nice the Mycelium seem to really like oats - very thick!
Does anyone have a link? If I find it later I'll link it for ref. for anyone who is interested.

I like Steel Cut Oats [Re: drwatson]

UPDATE:
The smallest jar with oats (1 pint) is 100% colonized. The middle jar is about 80% and the quart jar is about 50%.
All looking good.
Good strong rhizos all over, solid white that wants to eat the verm layer on top.
I saw a post asking about a substitute for BRF in the PF-Tek and I think this would be a much better alternative. Much more nutritious than BRF Oats seem to be.
