dangit. ok so i started my first attempt at growing about three weeks ago, using the pf tek. everything was going swimmingly. my jars were pretty well colonized, they started pinning earlier this week, and i even have some of these:

the jars as you can see are flipped at this point. also just this week i've been putting them under a fluorescent light for 4-6 hours a day. i was gonna birth them this weekend.
but then, just last night, this appeared on the bottom of every jar:

so i'm guessing i'm screwed? can nothing be done to save them? how could this happen? they've come so far, how could they suddenly all go bad at once, and only on the bottom of the jars? any help is most appreciated.

most likely a combination of things:
- a slip up in sterile technique - excess moisture in the jars
It's a little hard to tell from those pictures.. but it looks like you left the cakes in the jar for too long. As cakes colonize, they shrink away from the glass.. it's possible that some of the verm barrier on top had trapped some trich spores... then when the brf/verm underneath retreated back w/ the myc growth, the verm on top fell on the sides and introduced mold.
I'm not completely up-to-date on the handling of the pf-tek these days.. but i think you should have birthed them first into a sterile fruiting chamber before introducing light and inducing pinning.
You were on the right track... just give it another go... once you see green, it's pretty hard to salvage a cake.

thanks. you don't think it might just be bruising though? it loks more blue than green to me. in fact my first reaction to seeing it was that it looked like a bruised mushroom, but i didn't know mycelium could bruise until just now. the cakes HAVE been knocked around a bit in there. i'm gonna try wiping it with a tissue and see if it comes off.

That looks like it could be bruising. If its not a contamination fruit them asap.

dude, that is just bruising. it is fine! Birth those bad boys. the dark spot looks like it was a piece of vermiculite that fell down the side and landed there once you flipped them over. it is fine. That is not a contam. If it is you will learn from it. Birth it and let them grow. Looks totaly healthy

second opinion. that cake is more then healthy, it is stout. There are some badass rhizomorphs growing in a circilar patern form the inoc point. That mushroom is growing right form the inoc point and the mycelium is oldest there and this is why it is pinning there first. Wash your hands and birth it, kiss it and enjoy the fresh smell of mycelium once you crack it open

hi guys, thanks. yeah i figured it was bruising after i tried washing it and it would smear or anything.
one other question that doesn't have to do with contamination but i thought i would tack it on to this thread....
should i dunk and roll cakes that are already growing mushrooms like that. here's a couple other cakes i have, should they be dunked or should i just rinse them and put them in my pmp?

thanks again for the help

yeah dunking and rolling will not hurt the mushrooms. If they are firm that will still grow, if they are soft you can pick them off
