Anyone know what happens if you pay a speeding ticket one day late?

Nothing happens. Not a damn thing. I paid a speeding ticket about a year after it was supposed to be paid. My license was suspended until I paid the ticket and then had to go give the DOT $20 for a new license.

I was hit with a ReAresst warrant order and had to sit another day in court.

If you miss your court date, they can come to your house and arrest you.

You might think "nah, jails are for criminals, they won't put me in there just cause I owe them money."

They came to my house, handcuffed me, and took me to jail.

Must have been sweeps week....

Some states are jackasses like that. I don't think most stated do it and it's mostly just backwards asshole red states that do it.

It's like a throwback to debtors prison back in old England. It was a pretty stupid idea then, and it's even dumber now.

I thought that they couldn't do that anymore. I thought I had some guaranteed right against being jailed for debts... That is until they took me to jail for a $212 fine I never paid.

They came to get me the night before an o-chem final. Luckily I bailed out the back window with my books and evaded them for a few days. I had no money to bail out with and would have surly failed if they had gotten me.

Genius!

Yah, I hate bullshit like that, glad you escaped.

They don't care what you have to go through when your arrested (i.e. your car is towed and impounded, get fired from work, etcet) that makes it impossible to pay your fine.

What makes more sense is to order you to appear to set up wage garnishment or a payment schedule, and arrest you if you don't make that date.

Putting out arrest warrants for petty shit just costs more money than it saves and garners disrespect for the law

Exactly! With one court order sent to your employer they can simply garnish your wages until paid. If they're not employed then just let it go until they're employed again, if ever. It's never going to pay to arrest someone for debts. If you're employed they can garnish your wages, if you're not then you probably can't afford to pay anyways and will just cost them money to jail.

They have two good options to collect, wage garnishment and withholding your tax returns.

I mean what the fuck? It's obviously wrong to imprison someone in order to extract money from them or their relatives. They're no better than thugs and gangsters.

They didn't even bother to send me so much as one scrap of paper trying to get me to pay or go to court or even to remind me that I had a ticket. I had torn it up and threw it away the night I got it and had forgotten about it, assuming that I'd be getting notification in the mail.

The only thing that saved me was that they called me first saying it was a new program to let people turn themselves in when warrants come up in the computer rather than be arrested in front of friends and family. They were total assholes about it. I offered to turn myself in by noon the next day, right after my o-chem final, and they told me that wasn't good enough and the cops would be there in 5 minutes if I wasn't going to turn myself in. So I told them I needed a few minutes to call around for bail money and then it would take me about 10-15 minutes to walk over to the jail. I figured that the cops might be outside watching my apartment to see if I was going to run for it. So I gathered my things and bailed out the back window. Apparently the cops showed up about 15 minutes later looking to arrest me. Luckily I was down at the U studying the rest of the night.

They were such pricks about it that I figured they might even show up to my final to bag me. They would have ruined my entire semester just to imprison me for a $215 fine! Bastards!

Honestly, it just depends on the place you were ticketed in.

I have an unpaid ticket in Georgia (sorry, I was not paying money and taking off work to drive for hours to sit in court for hours to pay money) and I just got a warrant.

I have unpaid tickets here. There are warrants issued but they won't actively pursue me. If I get pulled over, I'm probably going to get arrested though. Here I'll have to pay the $450 for the tickets, $44 to get the two warrants lifted, $150 to get my license unsuspended, and $23 to get my new license.

Another court I went to that was in a town two hours from here was going to detain me for not paying the day of court. They gave me an hour to call around and try to borrow some. I got the ticket because I went to the DMV here 4 separate occasions (meaning had to take off work) at earlier and earlier times and never was there soon enough to get my license. The fourth time I went 90 minutes before they opened, meaning 6:30am, and the line was wrapped around the building and they couldn't get me that day. Told me to drive to a city 2 hours away to their DMV. I was trying to hurry up and get there so I could get back to work, and got a ticket for speeding and driving without a license... When I went back to the court and told them I didn't have anyone that could get the money, fortunately they let me go home but I had to give them the $17 in my pocket.

I didn't pay my speeding ticket on time and it doubled, and i had 30 more days to pay it or my license would get suspended. My parents paid it.

They do, it's called a court date. When you miss it, that's when you get fucked. It's your own fault for speeding and then missing court.

1) I'm not talking about fault, I'm talking about reasonable resolution of the problem. (and try driving on I-71 anytime around the holidays without getting fucked over for doing 70 or so)

2) Not all courts allow payment plans, the law doesn't mandate it, and some judges are dicks like that. THis is likely why people run (fear they cannot comply w/ a payment plan)

Try getting pulled over in Ashland...
