I'd definitely hold out for RogerRabbit's input as it's his studied field of expertise, however I was under the impression that you needed a TRAIC to control a Permanent Split Capacitor motor? (S.W.A.G. on the motor's type)

You can't use a rheostat to control speed on an AC motor. Provided the motor is rated for 120 VAC, connect the white of your cord to the white wire on the motor. Connect the green on your cord to the metal frame of the motor. There should be a green screw to put this wire under. Connect the black of your power cord to either the black, blue or red motor leads, to to obtain high, medium, or low speed respectively. Be sure to cap off or tape the unused speed control wires. RR

I am an electrician too, I wired a similar thing for a guy a while back. Simplest solution became three plugs hanging off the motor, trying each on with a speed to see what worked best for him.

cant you get a phase shifing controller from a ceiling fan ? isnt that the safe way to change speed by frquency changes 60 cycles /sec down to 40 or 30 cycles/sec?

IF u want to change between speeds, then u could wire in a switch too.
Is this for a flow hood?

If your motor is controllable, that unit should do it. I'd connect it to the highest speed, which is black.
A rheostat is a variable resistor. They can be used in series with a DC motor to control speed. An AC motor requires a speed controller. Here's the one I use on my laminar flow hood. (second unit from top of page) http://www.littlegreenhouse.com/accessory/controls2.shtml I run it on high for 2 hours prior to doing any sterile work, and then slow it down quite a bit when doing transfers in front of it.
