So thinking I was being clever ...
    #7645896 - 11/16/07 09:14 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

... for some reason I though that after inoculating some new grain jars that it would help them colonize the grain more evenly if I were to shake the ever-loving-**** out of them to distribute the spores.

Sadly this time I acted first, and used the search function second... Now I know that the spores are monokaryotic and need to 'mate' to become dikaryotic before they'll reproduce at any significant rate.

I inoculated theses jars well over a week ago and there's still absolutely no sign of mycelium on them. However some BRF jars I inoculated at the same time are prolific (cuz you can't shake em')

Here's my questions, have I possibly set the guys up for complete failure? Would I be best to reinoculate than to bother waiting to see IF they'll crop up? My instinct says "Yes man, reinoculate, you shook them nearly to death, no way they found each other in there."

What would YOU do ???

i would wait...

there is no way you can over shake them..... i shake the shit out of mine! and yes you DO want to distribute the spores through-out.

ya got to think, the spores are microscopic, so there is NO way your going to shake em enough to divide all the spores..

it sounds like you MAY have other issues..

is there a funky smell, or even slightly odd smell?

does the grain look greasy?

some strains also take a lil longer to germinate, i would give them at least another week before i would worry too much.

BTW i would NOT re-nock em.. if the spores where good, and ya try more, your just wasting more good spores as you have other issues

So far so good on the smell and humidity fronts. I had no plans to give up for another week or so yet. I suppose the frustration of finding out that shaking the crap out of them slows them down is getting to me, particularly since I've never had BRF cakes outpace grains before this round. LOL

You can't over shake them, however I have noticed MUCh faster growth if you DO NOT shake them, and shoot the spore solution on the sides of the glass, to allow it to run down the sides.

This is the way I always do it now.
