G2G Master Jar Question
    #7644738 - 11/16/07 03:46 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Hi ~ How's it going? Does the main jar for a WBS G2G transfer need to be 100% colonized? I realize for best results the answer would be yes. But would would happen if you used a jar that was 85% - 90% colonized?

Thanks for any input
Shaq

Yes. It should definitely be 100% colonized. Anything less is just an opportunity for contamination. And you don't want to spread that and waste 8-10 more jars of spawn.

I routinely use jars that are 80% colonized or so for grain to grain, once shaken up the extra grain is mixed in so well that it is unlikely to cause any problems. You of course should pay close attention to the uncolonized sections of grain, because at times these sections might be uncolonized due to bacterial or foreign organism contamination, which obviously would cause a lot of trouble following transfer.

If you have good inoculation procedures and feel comfortable with your rates of contamination, it should not be a problem.

One should never use a jar that isn't at least 100% colonized for a grain to grain transfer. The biggest reason is that since sterilization is a relative term, it's never complete. You have a window of opportunity to get your grains colonized before the contaminants that survived pressure cooking come back to haunt you. If you grain to grain with uncolonized grains, you add their age to the age of all the grains in the receiving jar, possibly contaminating them all. The difference between 100% colonization and 80% colonization should be no more than two days, so don't risk failure for for a measly 48 hours.
