Is burnt lid seal toxic to spores?
    #764310 - 07/21/02 10:05 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Last night I sterilized an empty wide mouth 1/2 pint jar to hydrate some spores from a print. Put it in the oven at 500 degrees for @ 20 min. I had a new lid on (upside down) with the ring loose. The gray ring around the lid blackened and smoked (smelled horrid) during the process. It left the jar with a slight brown tinge on the inside surface. My question is: Will this residue have any effect on the spores' germination? My intuition tells me there shouldn't be a prob. Anybody got any life experience re: this situation? Also, anyone know exactly what the little gray seal is made of?

Thanks much,
Elroy, boy genius

Usually I PC my glassware before use. Last night it was getting late and the PC was full of a big ole birdseed spawn bag chattering away. Wanted to sterilize a container quickly, the oven was unoccupied, the jar went in. Just like Hansel & Gretel. I do use distilled water to rehydrate spores, but if your glass isn't sterile, you may as well use pond water.
