drywall for casings, gypsum???

ive just read that dry wall can be used for casings and is gypsum ? my friend just got me some hydrated lime but i dont think its the right one as its for brickwork in buildings is this right that its wrong ? i have some crushed oyster shells but have read they are for long term ph buffering GD

Don't use masonry lime. Gypsum is not for raising pH the way lime is. However, drywall is gypsum. It's much cheaper to simply buy it in a bag at the nursery. RR

ok thanks for clearing that up for me , another question along the lines of casings (saves opening another thread) is coir i just purchased some and its says to soak it which is fine but how do you judge how much from the dry block to use ie how much it swells,or is it just experienced eye work thanks

The blocks are not all uniform in size so nobody can say exactly how much water to add. Rougly 1 gallon per pet store sized block seems to be a ballpark figure. Let it soak up all the moisture it will for about an hour, and then squeeze test to determine field capacity. Pasteurize at 140F to 160F for an hour. RR

so i should use the whole block and not cut some off see for the size casing ill be doing i wont need all of it will i? lol ill do some more research im still a cake man at the mo but am moving on to wbs soon as my lc are ready so just doing the thinking but clearly i need to read a bit more

DRIERITE is also gypsum. Even though it's quite a bit more expensive than gypsum from the nursery.
