Thousands of English school children are regularly getting drunk and indulging in drugs, a government survey has found.
The snapshot of 10- to 15-year-olds by Britain's education watchdog found nearly half had tried alcoholic drinks, with a fifth saying they had been drunk at least once in the past month.
One in six children aged between 14 and 15 said they had been drunk at least three times within the past four weeks.
The survey also found that one in seven children had dabbled with illegal drugs, with 15 per cent of 12- to 15-year-olds admitting to having experimented with cannabis, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy and LSD.
More than 110,000 students took part in the survey, organised by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED).
On the worries facing children, bullying and exams were their major concerns.
The survey revealed 30 per cent of children had been bullied in the past four weeks, with most saying their school had done nothing about it.
Children as young as 10 said they were worried about school exams and more than a quarter of older pupils were stressed about sex and relationships.
More than 20 per cent of 10-year-olds and nearly a third of 15-year-olds also said they were anxious about money.
Despite the apparent widespread use of alcoholic drinks and drugs by children, the survey also found that more than half aimed to go to university while a quarter said they had helped an elderly or disabled person.
OFSTED's chief inspector of education Christine Gilbert called on the government to take notice of the survey's findings.
"The survey presents much that is positive about life for children and young people today," she said.
"However, it is also clear that more needs to be done to address children and young people's worries and concerns about how safe they feel, exams and tests, and what would help them learn better."

I don't know how accurate those surveys are. Granted a lot of that could be and probably is true. But I remember taking those things back in school and nobody told the truth, they all lied about taking everything on the survey.

I find this particularly funny. Only because I would expect nothing less. The next generation I hope will not forget their days dabbling in drugs.

Kids drinking at a young age in Europe is just them expressing their culture and past.

drug users don't go to college? Drug users don't help the elderly?
