Oysters and nostalgia
    #7642123 - 11/15/07 10:05 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

This time of year is the changing of seasons. Up here in Montana it means that the mushroom season is pretty much finished, except for a few late bloomers. I find myself frequently having vivid mushroom dreams. Finding a patch of boletus edulis, only to wake up and see snow falling outside is more like a mushroom nightmare. This time of year there arn't many outdoor activities, except for yogging and cowtipping. While the flyfishing can be amazing, I find myself wishing I was in the heat of the mushroom season, or fastforward a month or so, riding the cold smoke. So, I sit here trying to relive the great mushroom season I had, and all the great gifts nature has bestowed upon me. Also, I get a little envious of the people still finding mushrooms. My final finds of the season (4 inches of snow on the ground) came just the other day when I was flyfishing with my girlfriend. She landed a beautiful 17" rainbow (with my help of course), and we were walking up to the next hole, when I stumbled upon a few more fall oysters. They were a little ragged but exciting nonetheless. All I was after were the stems. Now I have a mass of fairly well colonized cardboard. A little project to keep me feeling shroomy through the winter.

pleurotus ostreatus:

And here's a little recap of the season to make me feel cool:

Panaeolus subbalteatus in late may, early june:

Morchella esculenta from june:

Morchella elata from june:

Cantharellus Cibarius from July:

Boletus edulis from September:

Boletus pinophilus (thanks ToxicMan) from September:

Chroogomphus vinicolor from September:

Some type of suillus from September:

Trout, boletus, hedgehogs, and beer from September:

Hydnum repandum from September:

Amanita muscaria from september:

Ahhhhhhhh, much better!

Fantastic season. Thanks for showing those. Looks like you had some good eating through the warmer months. Morel season was crap down here in Ga, and chanterelles never even came out as far as I know! Your pics are great, I'll be looking at this thread when the mushroom joneses hit me. Thanks.

Hey man, glad you liked em. I know what you mean by the mushroom joneses. I'm shaking right now.

That's rough about the morels and chanterelles. I have a feeling that things will turn around down there next summer. Damn drought. We've been in one for years up here. Well, I hope you have one hell of a season next year. Peace.

Happy mushrooming!
