definitely - living life fully with dedication. 'complete attention.' Or rather figuring out how to do so and doing it.
In the meantime I seem to have lost my 'fear' of death - but instead of embracing life the mindset has evolved to more of an indifference and slight apathy.
Bummer?

There are lots of things 'more important' than my personal safety and well-being.

I think physical and mental health are most important, with the stipulations that it's OK to be crazy in the eyes of society, and that safety and well-being not be overly associated with health.

next part of the question, (if yes) is this a conscious choice or is it compelled/instinctual?

No. Because every thing I care about (art, money, friends, etc) is all detrimental to my safety and/or well-being.

Hmm, if that's the case maybe you should look deeper. Have you really lost the fear or has it just been dulled and made unconscious?

the whole web of people and things I know and care about are all interconnected in such a way that this slightly higher target becomes most important to me.

Yes, but I was wondering on how can this be detrimental to one's well being.

NO!
This question will mislead some here for sure. While many like to "think" that there are more important things, delving into their actions and motivations will always show that the individual always comes first and foremost to themselves. Even if they take risks for others or care about others they do it because they believe it is the "right" thing (satisfies their self image as good or right) to do or they "love" them (loving others brings us pleasure or we would not do it).
There is nothing wrong with caring for yourself more and does not in any way hamper one from doing good or being part of the greater community.

well said
i thought about this a long time
if you look at bees they sometimes kill themselves to help the hive as a whole... i wonder if humans have a similar behavior
if we do, it would probably be partly instinctual... i base that on my own thoughts

Again, if we killed ourselves for the benefit of the whole we would do that because our personal beliefs dictate this as the best course of action to satisfy our self image. We do it because we consider it right and good and right and good bring us pleasure.
if you look at bees they sometimes kill themselves to help the hive as a whole.
Please don't try this at home.

Art is detrimental to my well-being because without it, I would be miserable (unless I had never experienced it in the first place). Money is detrimental to my safety due to any sort of health procedures and medicines that I may need to pay for, and also it lets me buy things to further improve upon my happiness and well-being. Without me, I'd have no use for my friends.

I am sorry, it just doesn't make any sense. Art can exist without the concept that sustains it., since Art is beauty seen/felt/heard by the observer. The other two explanations don't make any sense at all. Everything that we do is for our own good, one way or another. Even thinking that we do things that are detrimental to our well being.
