* Habitat: found near the coast in Oregon. found on dirt/mud. * Characteristics of the gills: really dark on the top, but when ripped apart, you can see a beige color under the dark color. * Characteristics of the stem: 1" to 1.5" * Characteristics of the cap: the caps are about 3/4" in diameter and are pretty dark. * Color that the mushroom bruises: It's really dark/brown, so I can't really tell, but I do see a slight purple/blue bruise. * Scent of the mushroom: smells exactly like wet cyaneses I had a while ago. fresh/woody/air smell. * My friend claimed to have ate a little bit of it, and says they were fine. but they are a lot darker than anything I've seen before, so I just figured I'd ask..

Wouldn't recommend chancing it...they look too far gone for a positive ID.

go back to the patch in a bit, when there is a fresh flush, those look shot to hell, they could be cyans but when something is that far gone it is impossible to tell.

The caps do not appear to be hygrophanous, so it isn't a Psilocybe.
Psilocybe can have dark brown caps, but they fade to a light color when they dry.

Alan, Cyans do not always fade to a light color when dry. During cold temps last week, a large portion of my patch had caps that were black from the freezing temps. I agree that they generally are lighter, but they can look like the above.
Either way, it doesn't matter, don't chance it.

they do look like dead rotten cyans but the only thing that it means is that you should go back to the patch and find some fresh ones
-------------------- Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

What??? The mushrooms are dried. Dried mushrooms never display a hygrophanous pileus. Hygrophanous means that the cap is fading from a dark viscid, translucent shade, to an opaque and dry, lighter shade.
So that identification feature cannot be applied to dry collections.

Often, yes. In ideal circumstances... However, I have found them nearly black, they were so blue, and they dry a very dark colour. Also, leaving them fresh too long before drying will cause them to bruise. Or just beating them around a bit.
Anyway, I would say those look like Psilocybe, but do NOT consider that a conclusive ID, as dried mushrooms are notoriously difficult to identify.
